August 24, 2022.
I sat in the garage with my stepfather, Lamar Simmons.
I was feeling depressed, and for once, it seemed like he was saying something encouraging.
That’s why I hit record.

But what I captured was something most survivors never get:
His confession.
His apology.

You would think that would be enough.
But earlier this year, my mother—who was molested in her own childhood—read my message and laughed.
She called me a liar.
Even with his words on tape.
Even knowing what it feels like herself.

When I was younger, I used to keep a diary.
Not just any diary—but one where I’d write as if I was talking to her.
To my mommy.
I wrote all the things I couldn’t say out loud. All the questions I was too scared to ask. All the truths I was afraid to speak.
And one day—he found it.
He read it.
And he threw it away.
Because he knew I remembered.
He knew I still knew.
And that scared him.
That was his way of trying to erase my truth—to condition me to forget.

But I didn’t forget.
And I won’t pretend.
I will not live in silence to protect Lamar Simmons.

This is no longer just about Me.
This is for every victim whose cries fell on deaf ears.
For the ones who were forced to carry the shame of someone else’s actions.
For those who were silenced, ignored, or disbelieved—by the very people they trusted most.

If someone opens up to you about their trauma, believe them.
Silencing a survivor to protect an abuser is one of the deepest betrayals there is.

To every survivor reading this:
You are not alone.
You are not crazy.
You are not lying.
And you are not what they did to you.
You are powerful.
You are proof.
And your voice matters.
