Pretty convinced that this was Michael peaking in to say hello while we were in the middle of our Grand Canyon trip. The aurora was a surprise but getting off the river to the news of Mikes climbing accident in Nepal was a bit more shocking.

I don’t have much to say at the moment besides that Mike was one of the best. Sure an amazing alpinist, skateboarder, skier, soccer player, athlete…. But most of all he was the best genuine guy out there. I wish I could relive all the time we spent together. From the drives in his Tacoma up to ski team training with Chason, to the time we hit an elk in the middle of nowhere Wyoming in a midnight snowstorm. Or the countless Clark Christmas parties full of good food and dancing late into the night.

I was so privileged to have the time with you that I did. The amazing conversations were always the highlight. You could have easily gone on about some epic trip to Europe you were about to do. A first ascent you just put up in Alaska. The fact that you were the US Ambassador of Skateboarding to Nepal. Or maybe even about one of your epic attempts of the never before climbed Jannu East which would eventually take your life. But you never cared to talk about your adventures. You wanted to listen. You wanted to engage. And that is something that I will always be grateful for. A quality, just like your smile that you shared with your dad.

For the last month or two I’ve been planning a presentation on October 29th for the George Gardner Scholarship Fund annual fundraiser.
It would mean the world to me, the Gardner family, and all the ouray county youth if everyone who can shows up.

Thank you Mike. You and your dad’s passion, smile, and kindness have and will continue to thrive through the youth of Ouray County!

Some special moments from an all-time trip down the Middle Fork with a stellar, small crew.

Trips like these remind me how lucky I am to have grown up in a family and with a group of friends that have allowed me to spend so much time on the river, experiencing these one-of-a-kind places.
