So it’s real! I will be the next Executive Director of Outlier Media . The love and encouragement from you all is unparalleled and I thank you! I refrained from posting anything yesterday because I wanted that day to belong to Candice Fortman. Candice is to be lauded for building an organization that has become an integral piece of the nonprofit news ecosystem in Detroit and around the world. She grew Outlier in ways no one imagined possible. Her legacy is cemented and I’m very proud to come behind her. I’m not replacing Candice because she is irreplaceable. I’m not filling her shoes because we wear two different sizes. I’m happy to share Candice’s commitment by doubling down on Outlier’s vision of a liberated city with a healthy civic infrastructure rooted in Detroiters’ participation and self-determination. I’d like to thank the amazingly talented team at BridgeDetroit who have come to understand my engagement philosophy and continue to run with it. After 4 years, I marvel at what we’ve been able to build. I love you guys so much. Detroit! I hope all of you would be willing to partner with me in a real way toward actualizing the vision. Outlier is your newsroom. Let’s get to work!📸: @leongjp @urbanconsulate by @orlandopbailey

This week, I’m contending with the loss of my paternal grandfather, Kenneth Bailey.Granddad passed away a little more than a year after the death of my grandmother, the love of his life. They married at 18 and shared 70 years together. It seems that one year without her was more than he could bear. 🥹🤎A public viewing will be held Friday, June 26, from 4 to 6p at Swanson Funeral Home (East). A Celebration of Life service will be held Saturday, June 27, at Swanson’s. The Family Hour begins at noon, followed by the Homegoing Service at 12:30pCondolences, cards and flowers may be sent to Swanson Funeral Home East at 806 E. Grand Blvd., Detroit, MI 48207. by @orlandopbailey

I’m excited that we’re creating a civic space to bring Outlier, Detroit Documenters, and BridgeDetroit’s impactful budget coverage directly to Detroiters. The city’s budget has major implications for our quality of life, and everyone deserves to understand how it works and how much the city has to work with.I don’t believe in gathering community in the evening without a hot meal, so dinner will be provided at 5:30p. Childcare will be available, too!Hoping to see young people, elders and everyone in between in the room for this one.Let me know if I can expect to see you there! by @orlandopbailey

In this season of PathBreakers, we are asking the question: Who has the power to shape what happens in their city? We are talking with community leaders that we call PathBreakers, people making big changes in unconventional ways and reshaping the way things work. We are asking each guest how they are making that happen and what advice they can give other community leaders facing similar challenges. In our latest episode, Outlier Media (@media_outlier) Executive Director Orlando Bailey (@orlandopbailey) discusses how a Detroit newsroom turned journalism into infrastructure for neighborhood power. In our first PathBreakers Playbook, he gives leadership advice on being accountable to community, having access to credible information, building trust through relationships, showing up consistently and advice for the next generation.#pathbreakers #leadership by @orlandopbailey

Information access is critical — you can’t shape your neighborhood if you don’t know what’s happening to it. Through TXT Outlier, Detroit Documenters and accountability journalism,Outlier Media (@media_outlier) and Executive Director Orlando Bailey (@orlandopbailey) have created an information ecosystem in Detroit where residents can get the facts they need to navigate complex systems and claim their power. Information is infrastructure and journalism designed to serve (rather than extract from) communities becomes a tool for neighborhood self-determination.In our latest PathBreakers episode, learn how one Detroit newsroom turned journalism into infrastructure for neighborhood power. Bailey joins co-hosts Tracey Pearson (@tisfortracey) and Jamie Bennett (@jbennett259) to discuss training citizens to be reporters, building community trust through relationships and being accountable to community. Tomorrow morning, the coffee is on Outlier.Local newsrooms are closing across the country. Whole neighborhoods are being asked to figure out what is happening in their own city without anyone tasked with telling them. And yet right here in Detroit a different model is being built.Outlier Media does not wait for you to come to them. They built a newsroom around a text code 67485 that lets a Detroiter ask a reporter directly about a landlord, a DTE bill, or City Council. They have trained close to 600 Detroit Documenters neighbors paid to sit in public meetings so the rest of us know what officials are doing. And once a month, they bring the newsroom to a coffee shop. That is the model. That is the bet. News is not just story to story it is everything that happens in between.Orlando Bailey is the executive director deepening that bet. A lifelong Detroiter. An Emmy-winning journalist. A community organizer long before he was a newsroom leader. It has been an honor to watch him and his team curate community in its most base form building a newsroom that looks like, lives in, and is accountable to the city it serves.Tomorrow, that newsroom sets up at Detroit Brew-ti-ful's newly opened second location on McNichols. Brew-ti-ful is a Black-owned, mother-and-daughter coffee house a warm room, a good cup, a table where strangers become neighbors. It is a place I often duck into to write, to think, to shape the work at Black Tech Saturdays. If you have not been, consider this your invitation. If you are a founder who knows you cannot solve a Detroit problem without first listening to a Detroiter be there. If you are a creative looking for the next collision that turns an idea into a thing be there. You are going to meet someone helpful. If you are just curious wondering whether it is for you, whether it is worth the morning be there. I would hate for you to miss the person who opens your next door.We are getting back into our roots. One conversation, one cup of coffee, one creative collision at a time.📍 Detroit Brew-ti-ful 14101 W. McNichols Rd.🗓 Thursday, May 14 • 9:30 – 10:30 AMThe coffee is on Outlier. See you there. by @orlandopbailey
