Snowboard vice world champion Flo Orley and FWT winner Stefan Häusl have left their active careers behind them - and are now passing on their knowledge to the next generation.
Orley as co-founder of the Freeride Academy Innsbruck, Häusl as a coach for young freeride pros on the Arlberg.
The impressive offspring from their own ranks proves that both are doing it right: Stefan’s daughter Jana is the current FIS Freeride Junior World Champion and Flo’s daughter Momo is already a two-time European Champion U14. Freeride DNA literally runs in the family in Austria.

Today marks the 30th anniversary of the one of the most legendary freeride events of all - the World Heli Challenge staged in Wanaka, NZ, from 1995-2002 and then resurrected in 2009 and going till 2014. Every big name athlete in free riding came in from around the world to play a part in what is renowned as the one event that truly represented the “free culture” of big mountain freesports. Up to 5 helicopters were used to heli athletes into the powder filled mountains surrounding Lakes Wanaka and Hawea and the jewel of the southern alps - Mt Aspiring. Chris Davenport, Jeremy Jones, Kent Kreitler, Travis Rice, Shane McConkey, Chris Booth, Seb Michaud, Guerlian Chicherit, Jossi Wells, Sam Smoothy, Todd Windle, Andrea Binning, Karleen Jeffrey, Eva Sandelgrad, Kai Zachrisson, the Kuzma sisters, Tim Vlandis, Scotty James, Axel Paporte, Lori Gibbs and the list goes on and on. They fueled the excitement and adventure in three days of helicopter accessed competition over a two-week window competing in “Extreme”, “Freeride” and the all time epic “Chinese Downhill”. Topping it off was the Wanaka Big Air, 60 loads of snow trucked in from the mountains with skiers and boarders flying through air in front of up to 8,000 people with the likes of Grinspoon, Spiderbait and the Celibate Rifles smashing out tunes to the audience. Wanaka and the world had never seen anything like it. To celebrate the event in all its glory, I’m going to drop content from the event over the next two weeks of what it was all about.
