After my Navy service, I had the honor of connecting with Orly at his shop, Humble Beginnings, a true cornerstone of our community. Despite initial skepticism, Orly’s dedication to Filipino tribal tattoos has sparked a revival in our heritage.

In Orly, we find not just a masterful artist, but a proud ambassador of our culture. His story is a testament to his craft and unwavering commitment to celebrating our Filipino heritage.

For Filipino History month and every month, I want to honor my Papang. My Grandfather. Rest in Paradise. Placido Guinto Ignacio,
Born Oct 5, 1922 to Elias Yumul Ignacio and Gaudencia Bautista Guinto of Pampanga, Philippines. He was enlisted in the Philippine Military Army and served towards the end of WWII. He was married to Angelina Estrada Lucena and had 10 children together, from which my mother was the 3rd. After my grandmother passed, he married Bituin Yumul and had 2 sons, Ely and Alvin, too young be my uncles 😎.
He came to America in 1977, stayed in Virginia with my uncle Rey and his family until my mother and I arrived in California in 1978 from the Philippines. He moved in with us, my babysitter, my walking buddy, my mentor.
A very smart man reading newspaper from the front page to the end. He loved the comic section the best and there would be laughing throughout the house.

LOCQUIAO
A hand painted sign I’ve gifted to my chief @orlycukui and his family. I collaborated with my big bro @carlosayalajr on the wood work and laser engraving as well as help from my big sister @melchonattack on the shape and Koru cuts. Full of love and took a village to create this behind the scenes. Thank you Mel and Jr for your guy’s help and support🙏🏽
Thank you Orly, for all of the opportunities you have pushed my way and for having an unexplainable faith in me that I couldn’t even understand for myself. I’ve grown so much because of you and what you have built, which I am so very humbly proud to be apart of. I have grown up because of you and the community you’ve led and I only look forward to growing more. Humble Beginnings is my tribe, where I’m from, and my home away from home. I love you, O🩵🤙🏽
