If someone re-recorded your melody, could you prove it was yours?

In this clip from The Ivors Academy Summit, Orphy Robinson shares the story of a melody he wrote that years later was re-recorded and used in another work – and why understanding copyright, ownership and credit is essential for every songwriter and composer.

The conversation helped shape our newly updated Knowledge Toolkit – a free resource giving songwriters and composers the knowledge and confidence to navigate the music industry.

This week we’re exploring Copyright, ownership and credit, including:
• How to prove ownership of your work
• Copyright under UK law
• Moral rights
• UK vs international copyright
• Sampling

Protect your music, avoid ownership disputes, and make sure you’re properly credited and paid.

Join The Ivors Academy for free and access the Knowledge Toolkit via the link in our bio 🔗.

We had a fun night at the @musicweekinsta Awards last week with the BBC. Our first time having two @foldedwinguk productions nominated! Big up to the team!! @bbcradio2 and @bbcradio3. It was great to meet new colleagues and catch up with old ones!

Amazing to see so much jazz represented across the night @femiondrums @orphyvibes @officialronnies and of course @sowetokinch repping ’Round Midnight for @bbcradio3. Huge congrats to @remiburgz, and to @bbc6music well deserved!

In a world that feels completely bonkers right now, it was great to switch off for a bit and celebrate the good stuff and be reminded why specialist music radio is so vital! taken in Grovner Hotel Park Lane by @orphyvibes

Why do so many artists feel lost when it comes to their rights?

Jazz multi-instrumentalist and creators' rights advocate Orphy Robinson knows the answer: "Coming from the point of view of an artist, a lot of it sometimes seems confusing."

After years of seeing creators unaware of what was available to defend themselves, Orphy made it his mission to champion musicians' and composers' rights.

Celebrating Roy Ayers Album “Everybody Loves The Sunshine” (50th Anniversary) Saturday 10th January at the Jazz Cafe..
Fifty years of a timeless masterpiece.
To mark its 50th anniversary, celebrated vibraphonist Orphy Robinson brings together an all-star line up, the Red Black & Green Ubiquity Ensemble.
Roy Ayers’ music has long been intertwined with Jazz Cafe — ever since we opened our doors, we’ve felt his influence and welcomed his spirit on our stage.

From block parties to bedrooms, record stores to radio waves, its title track has become one of the most recognisable and beloved songs in modern music. Released in 1976, Everybody Loves The Sunshine’s blend of jazz, funk, soul and disco has inspired generations, sampled endlessly and soundtracked countless lives.

To mark its 50th anniversary, celebrated vibraphonist Orphy Robinson brings together an all-star line up, the Red Black & Green Ubiquity Ensemble.

Together, we step inside the album itself — the joy, the soul, the sunshine — as if hearing it for the first time all over again.
