Orrys Race Report
Filling the red carpet with Love, Family and friends got me to the start and FINISH line!
There was never any doubt this race would test me. I knew lining up in Marbella it was going to hurt. Life had taken over in the lead-up, a big move, new priorities and I wasn’t as prepared as I wanted to be. Honestly, if it were just me, I probably would’ve pulled the pin.

But I had 17 supporters flying in to meet me. There was no backing out. This race wasn’t just mine, it was for them. They showed up for finish lines, not finish times.

The morning started with a breathtaking sunrise over the Marbella coastline. Surrounded by a sea of incredible women, I couldn’t hold back a few tears, pure emotion, gratitude, and pride. The cheers as we hit the water echoed in my ears, the sea was crystal clear, and the mountain backdrop was unreal.

I reminded myself, don’t wish it away. Once that swim’s done, a third of the race is already behind you.

Then came the bike. Whoever designed that course has a wicked sense of humour, it was brutal. Every corner revealed another climb, another challenge. Five kilometres in, I wanted to quit. The wind gusts were savage, panic attacks came and went, and I just kept telling myself: get to T2 in one piece. I counted down every 5 km — one for each of my supporters — until finally, racking that bike felt like the biggest victory of all.

And then the run, my favourite part. My legs were heavy, my calf was hanging on, but the energy on course was electric. Supporters lined every corner, the views were magic, and every kilometre was a step closer to that finish line.

I’d done it. Mission complete.
The grit and determination are still there, I’ve still got it.

The morning of the race greeted me with howling wind, transforming the lake into a choppy pit.
My tri breakfast ritual consisted of Marmite crumpets, porridge, 🍌 , and ☕️.
Final pump of the tyres, nutrition check and nothing like a last minute panic of forgetting your swim cap!
Water temp was lovely, the mass start was intense and got bashed about a fair bit. Hard to get a rhythm with the waves but 1/3 done. Took my time in transition, forgot my bike socks which meant blisters. Doh! Tried to just turn the legs and save myself for the run, didn’t account for the head winds up hill on the return stretch. I broke the ride down and celebrated as I went. I got stung by a bee on my neck, had to pull the bugger out! Kept thinking how lucky I was to be able to do this when so many others would never have the opportunity! Met some friends along the way, calling out the names of anyone that looked liked they needed a boost. Trying to savour every moment. The views are breathtaking, miles and miles of scenery. Telling myself I loved the wind! Smiling every mile. 2/3 done. Transition 2, thank god I’d packed the socks in this bag! Run course is 4 laps along the lake, so much support from the crowd and the volunteers were incredible! Seeing MUMSY and Kyle helped. My leg really started to feel it around 29km. The fact I was able to run the whole course I just felt so grateful. Small slow steps, no long term damage, 3 toilet stops, unbearable cramps for 20km. But still smiling and chatting to anyone that would listen along the way. With 1km to go I started getting really emotional and I couldn’t breathe from the feeling of nearly being on the red carpet! As the finishing chute came into site, MUMSY was there to enjoy the moment with me and I rang the bell. I finally heard the words I’ve been waiting for Jamie Orr YOU ARE AN IRONMAN! I floated down that carpet, accepted more love and fabulous commentary from Kyle, high five from coach and over the line with an excited jump! There truly is no feeling like it. Back in the wetsuit and back in the water… kicking off swim training for triathlon season.

I’d love to say I missed it… but that would be a lie.

At least Merewether Baths makes hating swimming feel slightly more glamorous.

Orry’s race report -Coast to Coast, my first attempt, my first DNF. But absolutely no disappointment here. I worked hard, gave it my all, and soaked up every second of this adventure.

The run if we can call it that? Let’s just say I left my mark—five tumbles, one of them Oscar-worthy. Full somersault, rolled down a hill, and still got back up laughing. The kayak? 52km in, I missed the cut-off, but I wouldn’t trade those hours in the Waimak Gorge for anything. The serenity, the challenge, the sheer privilege of being out there—it was unreal.

Not finishing doesn’t mean I failed. It means I showed up, pushed my limits, and lived every moment. Being picked up by the jet boat and being made to stop was the only way I was being pulled off that race.

Key takeaways for me, I am not and will never be a quitter! I can handle the DNF.. I will ALWAYS get up again and keep going! I learnt a new discipline for this. The fact I navigated 52km of river lines and survived Salmon rapids without capsizing is a win in itself!

New Zealand will have a piece of my heart forever and I shared my journey with so many wonderful people from my support crew, my coaches, my fellow competitors, the amazing volunteers, the friends of family following me on the tracker all day long! ♥️

I am surrounded by so much love, the messages and support I have received is hands down the most humbling thing ever. On to the next ☺️
