What do we mean when we say “ORTHODOXY OR DEATH” and “DEATH TO THE WORLD”?

Orthodoxy or Death does not mean hatred or violence. It means: better to lose everything than to lose the Faith. No compromise when it comes to Christ.

Death to the World means putting to death the passions, pride, vanity, fear, and slavery to the spirit of this age. It means refusing to let the world decide what you worship, what you value, and who you are.

It is not a rejection of people or of life — it is a rejection of the world within us that pulls us away from God.

This is not a call to violence.
It is a call to spiritual warfare.

Die to the world.
Stand in the Faith.
Live for Christ.

Fighting Demons In The Garden Of Your Mind
What Spiritual Warfare Is All About

Through free will and godly zeal we can learn to deny ourselves.

Our first line of defence against evil thoughts and passionate desires is to learn to deny ourselves.

When we notice that we are thinking an unkind or lustful or hateful or any other wicked thought, the Jesus Prayer is very helpful. By begging our Lord Jesus for mercy for allowing such a wicked weed to grow in the garden of our mind, we are denying the thought.

We also deny ourselves by not doing what our passions are urging us to do. However, this requires discernment. Most physical passions are not in themselves evil except when they are out of control or perverted into a fetish or a means to escape or postpone dealing with a problem.

Another way to do spiritual warfare against evil thoughts and feelings is to avoid the situations that inflame or trigger such thoughts and feelings.

By watching ourselves and with the advice of our spiritual fathers, we can avoid sowing the seeds that grow into weeds. We can give no place to the evil one to tempt us in our mind and through our passions.

"Be still, and know that I am God." — Psalm 45:11 LXX

ἩΣΥΧΊΑ — HESYCHIA

Hesychia is the Greek word often translated into English to mean the spiritual stillness necessary for prayer. Archimandrite Vlachos, in his book Orthodox Psychotherapy, defines a hesychast as, “a person who is struggling in an atmosphere of stillness.” The Philokalia defines hesychia as “a state of inner tranquility or mental quietude and concentration which arises in conjunction with, and is deepened by, the practice of pure prayer and the guarding of the heart and intellect. Not simply silence, but an attitude of listening to God and of openness towards Him.”

This kind of listening prayer is hesychastic because it requires a silencing of the mind.

To achieve silence: Metropolitan Kallistos Ware says that “this is of all things is the hardest and the most decisive in the art of prayer. Silence is not merely negative – a pause between words, a temporary cessation of speech – but, properly understood, it is highly positive: an attitude of attentive alertness of vigilance, and above all listening. The hesychast, the person who has attained hesychia, inner stillness or silence, is par excellence, the one who listens. He listens to the voice of prayer in his own heart, and he understands that this voice is not his own but that of Another speaking within him.”

Many holy men and women recommend that you pray and sit in silence in the morning hours. This is the best time. Wash your face and follow your prayer rule (given by your spiritual father) and complete it by sitting in silence, perhaps five or ten minutes listening to God. Psalm 46:10 “Be still and know that I am God.” If you spend a few minutes every day praying The Jesus Prayer, we will be more involved in the lives of those around us. Saint Seraphim of Sarov says “acquire inner peace and thousands around you will find salvation.”

☠️ Skull - the Head of Adam (Глава Адамова)

The skull depicted at the foot of the Cross in Orthodox iconography represents the head of Adam, the first man.

According to ancient Christian tradition, Christ was crucified at the place where Adam's remains were buried — Golgotha, the Place of the Skull.

The blood of Christ flowing down upon Adam's skull symbolizes the redemption of mankind, the cleansing of sin, and the victory of life over death.

The first Adam brought death into the world. Christ, the New Adam, brings resurrection and eternal life.

This is why the skull in Orthodox iconography is not a symbol of the worship of death, but of its ultimate defeat.

“If you die before you die, you won’t die when you die.”

The famous inscription associated with St. Paul’s Monastery on Mount Athos carries the heart of the ascetic life: die to the ego, the passions, pride and attachment to this world before physical death comes.

Die to the old man — and live in Christ.

Then death is no longer the end, but the passage into life.

“I did not come to bring peace, but a sword.” — Matthew 10:34

The sword of Christ is not a symbol of violence against others. It is a symbol of the struggle against evil, sin, the passions, and above all — against ourselves.

The hardest battle is always fought within.
