The General Who Found the Cross: Holy Great Martyr Eustathius Placidas ☦︎

The Church honors the Holy Great Martyr Eustathius Placidas and his family.

A great Roman general from the time of the emperors Titus and Trajan. Once, while hunting, he chased a deer. By God's Providence, a bright cross appeared between the deer's horns and the voice of the Lord came to Placidas, instructing him to go to a Christian priest and be baptized. Placidas, his wife, and their two sons were baptized. At Baptism, he received the name Eustathius.

Then Eustathius secretly left Rome with his family. When he arrived in Egypt, temptations immediately fell upon him. A wicked barbarian abducted his wife, and both his sons were captured by wild beasts and taken away. Eustathius settled in the Egyptian village of Vadisis and lived there as a peasant for fifteen years.

Then the barbarians attacked the Roman Empire, and Emperor Trajan sent two of his officers to search for the great general. They found Eustathius and took him before the emperor. Eustathius gathered an army and defeated the barbarians. On the way back to Rome, he found his wife and two sons.

When Emperor Hadrian summoned the duke Eustathius to offer sacrifices to the idols together, Eustathius told him that he was a Christian. The emperor threw him into torment along with his wife and sons. But since the beasts did not harm them at all, they threw them into a burning metal ox. On the third day, their bodies were taken out dead but unharmed.

Thus, this glorious duke gave both the king's things to the king and the things of God to God and passed into the eternal kingdom of the Lord.

Wealth is Christ: Holy Martyrs of Antioch ☦︎

In the time of Emperor Probus, in the 3rd century, when a certain Atticus was governor of Antioch, two Christians, Trophimus and Sabbatius, both respected and honorable citizens, came to Antioch. But it was at that time that the impious celebration and sacrifice of Apollo took place in Daphne near Antioch.

Atticus was especially careful that all the citizens took part in that celebration. Well, since some saw Trophimus and Sabbatius, they reported to Atticus that these foreigners were not taking part in their celebration. Atticus brought them to court, and since they did not deny Christ, he subjected them one by one to torture.

After beating and tormenting them, Trophimus was sent to Phrygia to a certain Dionysius, an even more vicious torturer of Christians, and Sabbatius himself was brought out of prison for judgment. When the torturer asked Sabbatius who he was and what rank he held, he replied: “My rank and my dignity, and fatherland, and glory, and my wealth is Christ, the Son of God, ever living, on Whose Providence the universe stands and is governed”. For this they beat him and tore him, scraped him with iron, until his bones came out from under his flesh, and in those torments he expired.

As for Trophimus, the torturer Dionysius subjected him to great torments and kept him in prison for even greater ones. Then a certain senator Dorymedon, a secret Christian, came to Trophimus in prison and served him. When he learned of this, the torturer began to torture both of them and finally threw them before the wild beasts.

But the wild beasts did not even touch them. Saint Dorymedon deliberately teased the bear by pulling its ears in order to tear him apart, but all the while the bear was fond of him. In the end, the torturer ordered that Saints Trophimus and Dorymedon be killed with the sword. The souls of these martyrs reign in heaven.

Martyrdom Before the Holy Icon: Blessed Prince Igor of Kiev ☦︎

The Church honors Blessed Igor, Prince of Chernigov and Kiev.

Persecuted by his relatives and caught in the bitter political strife of Kievan Rus, Prince Igor chose the heavenly kingdom over earthly power. He left the world and became a monk.
However, the Kievans, deeply dissatisfied with the Olgovich dynasty to which Igor belonged, wanted to exterminate it completely. In an act of senseless mob violence, they rushed to the monastery where the prince had taken refuge.

They caught the young and innocent monastic while he was praying before the icon of the Mother of God (which was later called the "Igor" Icon in his honor), and brutally killed him.
For this terrible crime against an innocent man, many misfortunes subsequently befell the Kievans.

God quickly glorified His martyr: on the tomb of the blessed one, the faithful saw candles that lit up by themselves several times, and a miraculous pillar of fire was visible above the church where he was buried. This happened in 1147.

Troparion of the Right-Believing Prince (Tone 4)
"You were taught by the Lord to seek first the Kingdom of God, and you left earthly power to take upon yourself the monastic yoke. Therefore, you were crowned with the wreath of martyrdom, O passion-bearer Igor. Pray to Christ God that our souls may be saved."

A Light on a Hill: Saint Eumenius of Gortyn ☦︎

The Church honors Saint Eumenius, Bishop of Gortyn in Crete.

From his youth, he wholeheartedly followed Christ, freeing himself from two great burdens: the burden of wealth and the burden of the body. He freed himself from the first burden by distributing all his possessions to the poor and needy, and from the second by great fasting.
He first healed himself, and then began to give healing to others. Dispassionate and filled with the grace of the Holy Spirit, Eumenius shone with a light that cannot be hidden.

As a bishop in the 7th century, he governed the flock of Christ as a good shepherd. He was a father to the orphans, a treasure to the poor, a comfort to the mourners, and a wonderful miracle worker who killed a dangerous snake, cast out demons, and brought rain during a severe drought in Thebes.

Saint Nikolai Velimirovich beautifully captures his life and enduring legacy in this Hymn of Praise from The Prologue of Ohrid:

"Wealth and the body, two heavy burdens,
Eumenius threw off, and took flight to God.
Merciful and pure, a hierarch of God,
With the cross he healed, with prayer he helped.
A father to orphans, a staff to the old,
And to the sorrowful, comfort and joy.
By his fasting, he cleansed his soul,
By his love, he drew God's grace.
Now in heaven, he prays for us all,
That we may be saved by his holy prayers."

The Grandmother of a Nation's Faith: Holy Martyr Ludmila ☦︎

The Church honors the Holy Martyr Ludmila, the first Czech saint.

She was the grandmother of Saint Wenceslas, the King of Bohemia. She was married to the Czech prince Borivoj. Baptized by Saint Methodius, the Apostle to the Slavs, she was very zealous for the Christian faith and converted many from paganism to Christianity.

After the death of her husband, she devoted herself entirely to the Christian upbringing of her grandson, Wenceslas, ensuring he would rule as a righteous and faithful leader.
However, her daughter-in-law hated her for this holy influence, desiring instead to strip the kingdom of Christianity.

Driven by resentment, she sent men to drown and kill the old woman Ludmila. According to Holy Tradition, the assassins strangled her with her own veil while she was praying, denying her the shedding of blood she had hoped for as a martyr. She suffered in Techin, in 927.
Saint Wenceslas, the great zealot for the Orthodox faith, was later killed by his brother Boleslav. Before his own martyrdom, Wenceslas buried Ludmila's body in the Church of Saint George in Prague.

Many miracles occurred from her relics, and she remains a powerful heavenly intercessor for converts, grandmothers, and those facing difficulties with in-laws.

Troparion of the Holy Martyr (Tone 4)
"Your lamb Ludmila calls out to You, O Jesus, in a loud voice: 'I love You, my Bridegroom, and in seeking You I endure suffering. In baptism I was crucified so that I might reign in You, and I died so that I might live with You. Accept me as a pure sacrifice, for I have offered myself in love.' Through her prayers save our souls, since You are merciful."
