A fantastic month spent in the Philippines chasing depth and getting close to the pre-lung collapse depths from years ago. This month was however highlighted by the beautiful community of freedivers that call Panglao home. The feeling of euphoria that freediving offers was outclassed by the sheer quality of people I was surrounded by. The ocean once again is seemingly the catalyst for all that is good in my life, it strikes awe and wonder still to this day, just as it did when I fell head over heels in love with it many years ago. After having visited, worked and dived some of the worlds most incredible marine landscapes / interactions I still believe I have only scratched the surface, can’t wait to see what’s next.

Wrapping up 2024 with my favorite photo from this year. Bit of a whirl wind but I’m grateful to have filled it with a tonne of travel to some of my favorite places in Asia and in Europe. This year has also involved quite large lifestyle / location changes that have been quite difficult to adjust to but all in all it’s been a good one. The photo is from the Dolomites in Italy.

For years, I’ve seen photos and videos from all over New Zealand and heard stories from friends about just how beautiful this place is. Being so close to home, I always figured I’d make it here eventually, so I spent years chasing mountains elsewhere in the world. With New Zealand being considerably more expensive than places like India and Nepal, it was never really at the top of the list.

Three decades later, I’ve finally made it, this time with @sammywilliamson and our one year old daughter.

I can safely say the beauty lives up to every bit of its hype. I’ve been blown away by the sheer scale of the snow capped peaks, the glacial rivers flowing from the mountains and the wildness of the landscape. There’s something incredibly humbling about being surrounded by scenery like this. Travelling with Norah however has been wildly challenging at times, and we can’t quite pursue adventure days in the same way we once did. Our days are now shaped around nap times and early bedtimes rather than chasing the light or planning our days around the best conditions. But there’s something special about experiencing these places through a different lens, learning to slow down and finding joy in the little moments along the way even if doing relatively easy things are now quite challenging.

Watching Norah take it all in, with her little head resting over my shoulder and her breath in my ear as we look out across these incredible landscapes is really something quite special.

This walk towards Aoraki / Mount Cook was nothing short of spectacular, even with winds exceeding 90km/h lol. Norah held on tight, slept through 7km of the hike and still managed to have some beautiful little moments amongst the mountains where I’d like to think she was able to understand that the views are out of this world 😂

Three days of rain, misty hikes and rhododendrons in full bloom. We spent a whimsical few days exploring the Blue Mountains for Norah’s first birthday, and taking Sammy’s Nan to see the gardens around the Blueys.

It rained the entire time lol but that made the place feel different to our usual time spent there. Leura’s streets were charming as, with so much beauty tucked into every little corner. The hikes we managed to squeeze in were wet, misty and muddy, but all the more beautiful for it.

The usual sweeping vistas and golden hour scenes I’m often drawn to took a back seat, and instead I found myself snapping pics of the smaller things I might otherwise walk straight past. Favourite shot of the bunch is Norah tackling the flowers 🌸

Happy 1st birthday to our beautiful little Norah Louise Ignetik…

The journey into parenthood has been nothing short of incredible. This first year has taught us so much and we’re so grateful for every day we get to spend with Norah. The sheer joy and happiness she brings into our lives is something that’s hard to put into words.

Some days have been long and tiring and at times madly frustrating, but somehow I cant really remember what life is like was like before she came along as cliche as it sounds. More than anything though Norah has brought immense purpose into our lives and we’ve been very lucky to spend almost every hour of every day with her throughout this first year, with us both working remotely from home.

It’s hard to believe that she’s no longer really a “baby” and is already starting to enter her toddler years. There’s so much love and pride in watching her discover the world around her one little thing at a time. Watching her perk up at the sound of certain birds (particular love for Gang Gangs), sticky-beaking at unfamiliar noises, splashing in the creek, scrunching her hands through the sand and discovering different textures, sounds and feelings has been such a privilege to watch. Before Norah, I had little to no interest in babies or kids. Now, I could happily spend hours just watching them play scoot around the joint.

Anyways, here’s to another year of learning about the world together, as the 3 of us, taking it slow, paying attention to the little things and to finding meaning in every little bit of it.

What sits in the centre of this frame is the grave of Yukun, a place many people visiting Uluru walk past without ever realising its significance. It was pointed out to me by a senior ranger whilst visiting Uluru for work in February.

The story goes that In the 1930s, Yukun, an Anangu man, was shot and killed by a police constable in a cave near Uluru. For decades, the official version described it as self defence, but later records and journals cast doubt on that account, which revealed a broader story of frontier violence and injustice that too often goes forgottten in Australian history. It took nearly 90 years for Yukun’s remains to return to country for burial from where he was once again welcomed by community and laid to rest center frame.

In this section of Spirit Bird the attached song, @xavierruddofficial delivers a super powerful message about confronting injustice and fighting for what is right. At its heart I reckon is also a call for people to come together with courage, resilience and hope. Very emotional song for a very emotional picture.

We’ve been running @kaonaust gear for years and it’s never missed a beat! Everything is practical, well designed, and just works as intended with little to no upkeep. Our 150 series setup has come together largely thanks to Kaon! We’ve now got a highly functional set up thanks to all the kaon gear we’re repping. It’s all Australian made, with seriously impressive build quality that’s tough and looks sick.

In these shots, we’re running their new exterior rear window molle panels mounted to a Rhino Rack platform. We’ve set up an 18L Vaast water tank on one side and will sort the other side soon. We’ve now got 48L of water storage external the car. The panels are also sleek, functional, legal and they look unreal. Kaon really knows how to turn dead space on your rig into something useful!

Thanks to @kaonaust for hooking us up!! 🤌

@coody_australia once again delivering the goods. It was a joy to shoot this tent and I am sure there will be lots more time spent enjoying this one! Follow along to videos 4 and 5 on this post to suss more of it! It’s even got a chimney shoot, might whip out a wood fired burner for it over winter sometime, that would be lush as.

Happy Mother’s Day to my beautiful partner @sammywilliamson the journey into motherhood has been a seamless transition for you, your gentle, patient and caring nature is something I think all people should strive to achieve throughout their lives. Norah and I are very lucky to have you.

It’s been a joy to capture these photos to which I am sure we will look back on decades from now with the biggest smile on our faces 🤌 by @oscarignetik
