If the last year has taught us anything, it’s that we’ve been living in a state of duality. Yes there has been huge grief, and we miss Dad/Pop _every_single_day_ But we see him in the rainbows, the contrails, the dragon/butterflies, and in the clouds that would rip the wings of a 747-400… and today we got a whole bunch of that.

I share this beauty with a message of humble gratitude for every single person who has checked in, called (me and my beautiful Mez), messaged, sent flowers, sent memes, given hugs and especially for those who went out of your way to speak so fondly of Dad and shared your memories of him.

I thank you all, and Mezzy does too. We could not have gotten through all this without a very special bunch of amazing humans we are so fortunate to know and love.

10 yrs ago we were tired from the trip and glad to be home. This time last year was a disaster; a roof leaked, my Cardiac Rehab graduate gave me the most Dad present ever… power tools… Dad moved into the family room… and I wanted to shield Mez from all of what was to come.

Today we wandered through the halls of the nursing home, (was so good to see the people who made his last few years as comfy as they could, and there’s a goldfish/turtle pond where we Dad and I used to head out for vit D). We traipsed two of the Mark Oliphant Conservation Park trails looking for wildflowers, (as a Qantas plane soared overhead a dragonfly flew into view) and after much sunshine and wild orchid admiration. We checked out Great Annie’s name posted at the Blackwood Golf Club, then we shared the most delicious meal.

We’ve missed our Sydney family more in this last year than since the first year we moved here, but thankfully they’re all so incredibly wonderful that they don’t feel that far away.

10 yrs ago today we drove away from our childhood home in Blakehurst, en route to our new home in SA. Looking at this pic of Dad, even then we knew something was going on. But Mez wouldn’t know that for at least a half a decade, and I’m grateful for that. Masking your pain is hard, but he did it for my little girl a whole bunch.

Mez got to fly like Pop today, atop the most beautiful mare, Diva, led by her mama and extremely competent equine OT Sarah, who is an apple not far flung from her folks’ amazing tree… she spoke to Mez like her Mum speaks to all her colleagues and students and patients, it was a pleasure to witness, and what a gift for Mez! As were the 30-odd black cockatoos that soared overhead.

Meanwhile, I met the most beautiful younger man… feisty, energetic, affectionate, athletic, great appetite, and the luscious blonde locks of a youthful John Farnham… Zuzu I will hang out with you anytime!

💞I can’t believe this girl can still smile so wide after the year she’s had. But as you can see she’s got some amazing people looking after her (and her mum). Happy 14th birthday to my most beautiful, thoughtful, amazing, caring, compassionate, hilarious, please don’t grow up anymore nutbag. It’s a pleasure and an absolute privilege being yo mama, and watching you become the incredible human you are is just _so_ great. Home. Thanks in abundance to all for an absolutely incredible weekend. 740km, canola pooooooooorn (all from the car so no bogging or trespassing), Beef ‘n’ Guinness pie, another disappointing couple of prelim finals, Chunky Monkey and we can see tomorrow night’s venue from our hotel room! 100% success rate for identifying Farnsie fans so far, they’re friendlier than some of the locals, a couple from down the road are staying down the hall… 😂

Deathbed be damned! It was so nice to get out of the house, even if we got wet. Also, first healthy Ornate Cowfish I’ve seen since the bloom, when the beach was littered with dozens of them. Went to clear the stinging nettle cause feeding Claratyne to dogs is effective but silly, saw a beautiful admiral butterfly, and then two J-ing caterpillars and two chrysalises… waiting to be beautiful butterflies. Sigh. Left the rest to flourish as 3 admirals danced around, laying eggs, and then the dogs rolled in chicken sh*t… 🤢 dumb dumbs. by @oshaughnessyerin
