Scent Formulation.
Translating an artistic vision into an olfactory architecture.
This process begins with listening. Starting from a personal blend Amy created to protect the wool she weaves, we evolved it to evoke the memory of roman unguentaria, ritual vessels used in burial ceremonies.

We reinterpreted raw materials from ancient formulas to craft a fragrance designed for the bird-shaped sculptures.
5 trial formulas. 5 distinct personalities of the same olfactory concept. Smelled and evaluated together to find the ultimate synthesis.

Each shifts the emphasis, moving further from the ancient formula:
1. The nearest in spirit to the scents of unguentaria: cedar, laurel, frankincense, thyme, elemi.
2. Herbal, with geranium and lentisk. The closest to Amy’s original blend.
3. Hay-like, with blue tansy and Roman chamomile.
4. Smoky, with Java vetiver.
5. Liturgical, with clary sage.

the nomenclature behind our studio:
osmium is a transition metal. group 8, period 6.

1803, andagoya mining district, colombia.

in search of platinum, the chemist smithson tennant senses an anomaly underground: the scent of open air and thunderstorm rising from the depths of the rock.

following that effluvium, he ventures into the labyrinthof tunnels, remaining trapped in darkness for three days.

he emerges with the discovery of the 76th element and a sight permanently impaired. this is how osmium is born: the story of an odor that alters perception and guides through the dark. by @osmio76studio
