Seriously, reach out any time. I started therapy at 21, and thirty years later, I credit the work I’ve done with my therapists as directly responsible for the joy, clarity, and self-awareness I have now. by @ossotherapy

I work with people from all walks, with all sorts of issues, and I can’t help but set the bar a bit higher for our work together. Whenever possible, wouldn’t it feel good to seek out not only functionality but also joy, serenity, ease? Have we been socialized to not want too much, to only use therapy so that we’re able to get back to the grind? These are questions I’ve asked myself in my own therapy, and I’m grateful to be able to ask them in session with my clients.

Currently seeing clients in person in Union Square NYC and virtually statewide. #therapynyc #psychotherapy #nyc by @ossotherapy

This quote opened Barbara Hammer’s 1992 film “Nitrate Kisses,” which I saw, restored, at @thenyff this weekend. It’s profoundly illustrative of a core belief of mine, “the truth will set you free.” In Italian, it’s “La verità ti scatena” — ‘scatena’ means ‘unchain.’

Psychotherapy is about getting closer to the truth, naming what has remained unnamed, speaking the unspoken, facing what needs to change… taken in New York, New York by @ossotherapy

I didn’t read this when it came out, but I came across a copy someone was giving away and decided to check it out. I found it to be well-intentioned and effective but very narrow in who it’s talking to and how it understands the experience of the “gay man.” It’s from the “Will and Grace” era and feels relevant to Will and Jack, but leaves a lot of us out. Who’s read it? Thoughts? taken in New York, New York by @ossotherapy

“Before We Were Trans: A New History of Gender” introduces much-needed complexity to various stories of trans people throughout history, in the service of visibility, accuracy, clarity, and dignity. It’s rich in historical anecdote and draws salient connections to our present understanding of transness and gender, while posing questions about how we might proceed. It effectively encourages a broadening of our perceptions and conceptions of trans identity by welcoming nuance and rejecting simplification. Highly recommended. @kitheyamwriter by @ossotherapy

What a joy to read @j_a_n_e_ward’s book. To see so many of the thoughts I’ve had over the years, as I’ve tried to explain straight culture to my queer self, fleshed out and brought together so powerfully and eloquently, is extremely gratifying. Ward credits the work of many lesbian feminists who’ve laid the groundwork for this understanding, while expanding on it with her own research and lived experience. There’s much to appreciate for all orientations and genders, therapists or not, in this text. Scroll through for some of my personal highlights. Highly recommended. by @ossotherapy

American psychiatrist and professor Jerome Frank coined the term “help-rejecting complainer” in 1952, and the moment I read about it, I thought, “Wow, there’s a name for that?” I immediately identified people in my life who fit the bill and asked friends if they knew the term. No one did, but everyone could name an example or two.

As I considered the concept further, I thought, well if it takes two to tango, what do we call the person who labors to make countless suggestions and refuses to take the hint? Listener, helper, fixer, rescuer? Aren’t they responsible for being a willing partner?

Further still, I thought, well, I know I’ve been a fixer, but I’m sure I’ve been an HRC too, what inspired that behavior? What was I really seeking in those moments?

Continuing psychoanalytic training post-master’s (and for many years to come), I am exploring Intersubjective Self Psychology (ISP), since my intuitive approach seems to overlap with it quite neatly. I want clients to thrive and to access joy in their lives, and this approach facilitates that.

“Retaining Kohut’s emphasis on the self and selfobject experience, the book conceptualizes the therapeutic situation as a bi-directional field of needed and dreaded selfobject experiences of both patient and analyst. The ISP perspective allows the therapist to focus on the patient’s strengths, referred to as the Leading Edge, without neglecting work with the repetitive transferences, or Trailing Edge. This dual focus makes ISP a powerful agent for transformation and growth.“ taken in New York, New York by @ossotherapy

In my personal life, I’ve always admired people who could thrive in open relationships — I think of that capacity as a superpower that includes great self-awareness, ability to tolerate discomfort and uncertainty, and really effective communication skills. In my work, I honor every kind of relationship that I’m presented with and strive to understand my clients’ full array of desires and needs. #enm #nonmonogamy #psychotherapy #couplesgoals❤️ taken in New York, New York by @ossotherapy

From Brunson to Swift, Obama to Musk, celebrities can represent so much to us: what we aspire to or what we despise, how to do life right or get it all wrong. So should we talk about them in therapy?

Thinking about creatives, athletes, politicians, and even fictional characters, who strikes a chord within you? What might you learn if you explore the feelings and thoughts they generate? Do they match your values or challenge them? Are they templates or cautionary tales?

Whether it’s Beyoncé’s flawlessness or Hollanov’s erotic charge, if something lights you up, it’s worth talking about in therapy. Who are your faves?
