What you can see: a healed scar.
What you might feel: tightness, pulling or restriction somewhere else.

The tissues of the body are interconnected. Following surgery, changes around a scar may sometimes be accompanied by changes in the mobility of the surrounding abdomen, pelvis, ribcage or wider musculoskeletal system.

Scar Work Therapy and visceral osteopathy offer two complementary ways of assessing this relationship.

Scar Work Therapy gently addresses the mobility, comfort and sensitivity of the visible scar and nearby tissues.

Visceral osteopathy focuses on the movement of the internal organs and their connective tissue relationships with the rest of the body.

Together, these approaches allow the practitioner to look beyond the precise location of your symptoms and consider how your body is moving and adapting as a whole.

If you have a fully healed abdominal or pelvic scar that still feels tight, sensitive or restrictive, speak to our team about the most appropriate treatment approach for you 💙 taken in Ipswich, Suffolk by @osteopathinsuffolk

A surgical scar doesn’t exist in isolation.

Following abdominal or pelvic surgery, some people experience tightness around the visible scar alongside a deeper feeling of pulling or restriction. This may influence how comfortably they bend, stretch, breathe or move.

This is where Scar Work Therapy and visceral osteopathy can complement one another.

Scar Work Therapy focuses on the scar itself and the mobility and sensitivity of the surrounding tissues.

Visceral osteopathy considers the natural movement of the internal organs and their supporting connective tissues, and how restriction in these areas may relate to the way the wider body moves.

When appropriate, looking at both areas can provide a broader, whole-body approach - particularly following abdominal or pelvic procedures.

We're incredibly lucky at Osteopath in Suffolk to have specialists in both Scar Worth Therapy (Gee) and Visceral Osteopathy (Craig) who collaborate with their treatment approach as necessary to ensure our clients get the very best care 💙 taken in Ipswich, Suffolk by @osteopathinsuffolk

Understandably, you may feel nervous about someone touching a scar - particularly if the area is tender, sensitive or connected to a difficult experience.

Scar Work Therapy is a gentle and responsive treatment. Gee will begin by discussing the history of your scar, how it currently feels and whether you have noticed any changes to your comfort or movement.

Treatment works with the scar and the surrounding tissues using light, carefully adapted hands-on techniques. It should never feel forceful, and you remain in control throughout the appointment.

The focus is not simply on how the scar looks. We consider how it feels, how freely the tissues move and whether it may be influencing movement elsewhere in the body.

You do not need to simply accept ongoing tightness or discomfort as “just part of having a scar”.

Your scar doesn’t have to be painful to affect you.

Scar tissue can sometimes feel tight, firm, sensitive or “stuck”. You may notice pulling when you stretch, reduced movement around the area or that you have gradually adapted the way you stand and move.

Scar Work Therapy uses gentle techniques to work with the scar and its surrounding tissues. The aim is to improve mobility and comfort - not to force or “break down” the scar.

Treatment can be considered for many different types of healed scar, including those resulting from:

💙Caesarean births
💙Abdominal or keyhole surgery
💙Joint replacements
💙Orthopaedic surgery
💙Accidents and injuries
💙Cancer treatment
💙Cosmetic procedures

Scars do not have to be new to benefit from attention. Even an older scar can be assessed to see whether treatment may help.

Your scar must be fully healed before treatment begins. Please contact us if you are unsure whether it is ready 💙 taken in Ipswich, Suffolk by @osteopathinsuffolk

A scar may look fully healed on the surface, but the tissues underneath can sometimes feel tight, sensitive or restricted.

Scar Work Therapy is a gentle, hands-on treatment designed to support the function, mobility and comfort of scar tissue following surgery, injury or trauma.
Treatment may help to:

💙Improve the softness and mobility of scar tissue
💙Reduce feelings of tightness or pulling
💙Ease sensitivity or numbness around the area
💙Support more comfortable, confident movement

Every scar - and every person’s experience of it - is different. Treatment is therefore carefully tailored to you and your body.

If an old or recent scar feels uncomfortable, tight or restrictive, Scar Work Therapy may be worth exploring.
