Dr. Michael Cressman’s Bar-B-Que Science class is all about the art and science of flavor. Students learn how meat selection and quality, cooking methods, and seasonings work together to create an exceptional final product.

Recently, students learned how to wrap ribs in paper with butter, sugar, and spices from guest instructor Ryan Wallington '14 who smokes meats for Third Base Pint House. The technique allows the ribs to finish cooking while soaking up sweet and savory flavors.

The hands-on lesson also included making fruit cobblers on the grill, comparing Wagyu beef and Certified Angus Beef briskets in a taste test, and, of course, enjoying the finished ribs and cobblers.

For their final exam, students will put their barbecue skills to the test by preparing a complete grilled meal of their choosing featuring a protein, side dish, and dessert for evaluation. by @osuansci

In 1926, a Holstein cow, Maudine Ormsby, was selected as The Ohio State University's Homecoming Queen. Admittedly, there were some election irregularities that year -- 3,000 ballots were printed but more than 12,000 were cast -- but Miss Maudine served honorably, in addition to being an award-winning dairy cow.

In honor of the 100th anniversary of Maudine's reign, CFAES is raising funds for the college's Student Experiences Fund, which helps student explore opportunities, gain hands-on experiences and reach their full potential. Honor Maudine and help her make it from the Multispecies Animal Learning Complex to Ohio Stadium for homecoming with a gift. Link in bio. by @osuansci

Jacob Lansing chose the department of Animal Sciences at The Ohio State University because it seemed like a very welcoming place, and he quickly became a part of the community. Lansing joined multiple clubs and organizations and co-founded one, Buckeye Bunnies.

Lansing, a current Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine student and the college's first Pathway of Veterinary Excellence Scholarship recipient, advises prospective veterinary students to focus less on creating the perfect resume for veterinary school and more on what truly interests them. "Do the things that make you happy," he said. "Those are going to be the experiences that make you shine for vet school. People starting out need to find their passion."
