The Department of English at The Ohio State University
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Join the Department of English on Tuesday, Oct. 20 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Faculty Club for a lecture by Professor Carolyn Skinner, titled “Receptive, Collective Rhetorical Activity in U.S. Health and Medicine around 1900.”

Skinner explores how reception, the ways audiences take in and respond to rhetoric, reflects, shifts, and maintains people’s worldviews. Drawing on U.S. medical writing from around 1900, including reports on the discovery that mosquitoes transmit malaria, the debate over tuberculosis rates among African Americans, and press coverage of a woman physician’s obscenity trial in Chicago, she considers what this collective activity can teach us about how rhetoric informs individual and group perspectives, decisions, and behaviors.

Inaugural lectures celebrate Arts and Humanities faculty who have been promoted to the rank of professor. Interested in learning more? Check out the link in our bio! Why are we still fascinated by Frankenstein and Dracula?

Literature and Culture of London: London's Monsters is a May 2027 program open to all majors, with particular interest for students in English, history, popular culture, communication, and the humanities.

Step into the eerie world of Gothic fiction and explore how two of literature's most famous monsters emerged from the anxieties of a rapidly changing world.

Based in London, you'll experience the city as both a classroom and a character, visiting locations connected to these iconic novels while exploring the darker side of Victorian Britain.

Join us Thursday, Oct. 20 from 4 to 5 p.m. in 160 Enarson Hall to learn more about the program, and check out the link in our bio for details. Join us on Thursday, Oct. 1, at 6:30 pm for an evening with Professors Simone C. Drake and Molly Farrell in conversation at Prologue Bookshop!

Becoming Educated is Simone C. Drake’s engaging and bold memoir about race, class, gender, and the meaning of education in the urban Midwest, drawing on her own story as a Black girl attending recently desegregated Columbus public schools in the 1980s and 1990s.

In New World Calculation, Molly Farrell tells the story of colonial America as a testing ground for new ways of conceptualizing numbers, uncovering overlooked forms of numerical thinking to argue that colonialism and the rise of racial capitalism incited a struggle about what exactly a number is and what it can do.

Interested in learning more? Check out the link in our bio! Professional headshots of "Authors in Conversation" professors Simone C. Drake and Molly Farrell in front of their book covers: “Becoming Educated: A Midwest Story” and “New World Calculation: The Making of Numbers in Colonial America.” The following event details are listed below: "Thursday, October 1, 2026, from 6:30 to 7:30 pm at Prologue Bookshop." by @osuenglish
