when a regular turned friend and neighbor sends you a hilarious good morning voice memo, you just have to share.

in hindsight, our delays for permitting and construction gave us a solid amount of time to work on ideation and branding. how lucky were we?! 😂

so we mulled over the name…. when coming up with names that would encapsulate the vast region between southern spain and the middle east, there were some immediate ideas (andalusia, perla, etc) that popped up quickly but didn’t quite hit it on the nose. we needed something that felt like it was equally specific and ambiguous at the same time. Othello in the play is a Moorish man. “Moor” was once a broad and often ambiguous European term for darker-skinned peoples associated with North Africa and the Mediterranean Arab world. There was movement of people, ingredients, scholarship, trade, language and culture across that whole continuum: food, beverage, architecture, music. We wanted to celebrate it all. Most Americans are familiar with the Northern part of the Mediterranean (greece, italy), so we wanted to celebrate where Othello would have been from.

we couldn’t have made it to two without you and this crew.

restaurants are built by people who show up, care deeply, learn each other’s rhythms, push through the hard weeded nights, celebrate the good ones, and somehow do it all again the next day.

over the last two years, Othello has grown and changed, but the heart of it has always been the people who bring it to life every day. several of the faces in the picture were with us when we were training for our grand opening 2 yrs ago: Valerie, Caz, Lexie, Victoria.

to our lovely team, thank you for believing then what we were building and for making Othello feel like Othello every day since.

and to everyone who has walked through our doors, sat at our tables, told a friend about us, or come back again and again, you’re the reason we get to keep doing this and we couldn’t be more grateful.
