Aesop Hainan

We are pleased to share our work for Aesop Hainan, where Other Matter contributed striking installations at each entry and two expansive oculus light features—featuring over 2,000 individually crafted elements and more than 4,000 unique surfaces, each bearing its own artistic treatment.

Inspired by Hainan’s distinctive environment, the installations engage in a quiet dialogue between material and light, creating a layered interplay of translucence and texture that responds intuitively to the space and its surroundings.

Sustainability remains at the core of our practice; these elements were designed with longevity in mind, using renewable materials that can be reformed and repurposed—reflecting Aesop’s commitment to thoughtful and considered design.

A heartfelt thank you to the Other Matter team for their dedication, and to Aesop’s global teams whose vision brought this project to life. 感谢当地团队完成了不可错过的项目.

We are proud to introduce MarbleWood by Other Matter, an applied surface application for use in furniture and joinery. We will be exhibiting our collaboration with Made by Morgen at the upcoming Tactile Dialogues presentation for Melbourne Design Week with a range of furniture designed and fabricated by Made by Morgen.

MarbleWood is a new surface application from Other Matter that creates a marble-like finish when poured atop a timber substrate. Shown here as cabinet inlays, MarbleWood can also be used as panelling and joinery.

Introducing Itera.

@iterabakery is the first solo venture from former Sunda pastry chef Felix Goodwin and his partner Elena Nguyen, building on the pair’s experience behind Melbourne CBD favourite Kudo. Conceived as a neighbourhood bakery, pantry and café, Itera places craft and hospitality at the centre of the experience, making the process of baking as visible and engaging as the finished product.

The design takes its cue from the geometry of the corner site, Introducing a series of interconnected cylindrical forms that organise the interior into three distinct zones: bakery, pantry and dining. Offset from the existing walls, the cylinders read as architectural insertions within the existing fabric, creating a deliberate dialogue between old and new.

Head to Itera for your next GF baked good and cuppa.

A shop window graphic comes down after a campaign. The chemistry inside its material doesn’t.

Flexible PVC signage is built to be short lived and looks harmless once it’s in landfill. It isn’t. The plasticisers that make it flexible aren’t bonded to the material, they’re blended in, which means they keep leaching out for years after disposal. Several of them are now classified by EU, WHO and US regulators as endocrine disrupting compounds robustly linked to lowered fertility.

Other Matter Leather exists to interrupt that. Offcuts and end of life @omsignagefilm , reformed into a non-toxic, furniture-grade upholstery surface, from signage to seating with nothing leaving the loop.

We launched Other Matter Leather in May this year, with a selection of Made by Morgen’s Crafted seating range upholstered in Other Matter Leather by leather fabricator Issac Francis.

Since 2024, at handmade, single-maker scale, we’ve displaced approximately 1 tonne of that plasticiser-heavy PVC. Small against a global problem. But proof the loop works.

Other Matter Leather has been shortlisted for Material Innovation at this year’s Dezeen Awards, selected from more than 4,300 entries across 91 countries.

Thank you @dezeen

@framemagazine Issue 167 | Summer 2026 | Luxury vs. Necessity

“For Aesop Hainan, Other Matter suspended over 2,000 hand-coated aluminium panels beneath two ceiling oculi, each coated in an algae-derived biopolymer developed by Australian artist @frenchjessie. The film adheres without adhesive, so it can be repositioned across multiple lifecycles, and it replaces less sustainable materials like vinyl, acrylic and quarried stone. The entire store is built around the sensation the biopolymer enables: light refracted like the sun through water.“

#PlasticFreeJuly is a reminder that plastics don't have to be derived from fossil fuels ⬇️

Across material innovation, researchers and designers are turning to marine biomass as a renewable source of natural polymers and oils that can be used in applications ranging from packaging and textiles to foams, pigments, dyes, and decals. These might already be around you!

Algae and seaweed are rapidly renewable, require no arable land to grow, absorb carbon dioxide through photosynthesis, and in the case of seaweed, can support marine ecosystems and help reduce ocean acidification.

To avoid a sense of greenwashing, it is pivotal to know that not all biobased materials behave the same way - some still rely on petrochemical inputs, and many are not fully biodegradable.

🔎 This is where transparency becomes essential 🔍

HML's Material Collections exist to make these distinctions legible. Every product is independently evaluated through a rigorous vetting process focused on ingredient transparency, human health, and environmental impact - so designers and specifiers can understand what a material is made of, and what that means in practice.

Sill represents millions of years, poured by hand.

Created in partnership with @frenchjessie of @other_matter, the room divider translates Meridian’s earthly rhythm and layered tonality into sculptural form. With a surface made from sustainable MarbleWood, the piece evokes the sediment and stone of geological formations.

Two practices, one belief: objects made to last.

The Meridian Collection was the catalyst for our first collaboration with @frenchjessie of @other_matter.

Inspired by our shared commitment to craftsmanship and environmental stewardship, the artist and designer experimented with MarbleWood, a material developed in her Melbourne studio from an algae-derived polymer, locally milled pigment and hand-poured process. by @other_matter

Other Matter Leather is coming to Copenhagen.

Showing at Latitude, Frederiksstaden, for @3daysofdesign (10–12 June), curated by @clairedelmar .

The first product of a complete circular system: signage manufactured, used, returned, and reformed into a long-life furniture surface, with no material exiting the loop at any stage. Made entirely from offcuts and end-of-life signage drawn back from OM Signage Film. Organic, non-toxic.

Exhibited in use on the @madebymorgen Crafted Dining Chair and Crafted Stool, upholstered in Other Matter Leather.
