Darkness at Your Command: Your sleep sanctuary, your way! 🌙😴 No drilling or tools required. We often get asked how many blackout sets a window needs. Here's the scoop: Our panels can cover windows up to 50” in width on a curtain rod. If yours is within this range, it's your call whether to go for one or two. For windows over 50”, doubling up ensures that perfect fit! #bettersleep #parentingtips #toddlersleeptips #melatonin #circadianrhythm by @otterspacesleep
Hey there! I'm Melissa, and I'm so excited that you've found us. I call beautiful Seattle, WA, home, where I live with my amazing husband and our two kiddos. I'm excited to introduce myself to our new followers and share the journey that led to the creation of OtterSpace. My background might be a bit different—I hold a Ph.D. in Neuroscience, a field that ignited a passion for bringing innovative products to market, particularly those that can genuinely improve people's lives. It all started after the birth of my second child in 2020. Those long summer days, where the sun seems to have its own bedtime schedule, presented a challenge. Imagine this: bright sunlight sneaking through the gaps in their blackout curtains, waking them up at the crack of dawn. Frustration doesn't even begin to describe it. I scoured the market for a blackout solution that would truly block out every last bit of light and create the ultimate dark sleeping environment. But the options were limited, leaving us resorting to desperate measures like taping aluminum foil to our windows for most of the year. Our home felt like a never-ending game of hide-and-seek with the sun. But I was determined to make a change—for our family and for countless others facing the same challenge. That's when our Blackout Blocks came into existence—two years of dedication and countless moments of innovation led to their creation. They are designed to make your life easier and your sleep better: 💤 Block Out Every Bit of Light: No more unwanted light bleeds. Our curtains offer total darkness on demand. 🌞 Easily Opens for Natural Light: When you're ready to greet the day, our curtains open effortlessly to let in the sunshine. 🪟 Fits a Variety of Window Sizes: No tools or custom orders necessary. ✈️ Portable for Travel: Take our sleep-inducing magic with you wherever you go. We believe you'll fall in love with our blackout curtains just as much as we have. So here's to better sleep and a little touch of OtterSpace magic in your life. Thanks for joining us on this exciting journey! by @otterspacesleep

Did you know your sleep environment can affect your cortisol and metabolism overnight? Your body is built to wind down in darkness. Even moderate room light during sleep keeps your nervous system subtly "on," raising your heart rate and cortisol and nudging up insulin resistance by morning, even with your eyes closed. Darkness lets melatonin rise on schedule and keeps your sleep from fragmenting. 🌙 A darker room = calmer, less fragmented, more restorative sleep. OtterSpace creates 100% blackout conditions with no light leaks, helping you get the quality sleep your body needs to recover, recharge, and wake up feeling your best. by @otterspacesleep
Why is your baby STILL waking up every two hours? Are sleep regressions actually real? And why does every sleep expert seem to have a different answer?! 😴 If you've ever found yourself Googling wake windows at 3 AM or wondering if your toddler will ever go to bed without a battle, this one's for you. Join Chrissy Lawler of @the.peaceful.sleeper, Dr. Sujay Kansagra of @lullabee_sleep , Liz Hilton of @3d_knitting and @swaddelini , Dr. Natalie Barnett of @get_nanit , and Melissa Smith, PhD, of @otterspacesleep for Why Won’t My Kid Sleep?! The Science Behind Better Nights. We're bringing together five experts to separate sleep myths from facts and answer the questions keeping parents up at night. We'll talk night wakings, sleep regressions, sleep training, naps, bedtime battles, safe sleep, early morning wake-ups, and what the science actually says about healthy sleep development. Because there's no one-size-fits-all approach to sleep, but there are ways to make those long nights a little easier. If lowering your cortisol is one of your health goals, don't overlook your sleep environment. Cortisol naturally follows a daily rhythm, rising in the morning to help you wake up and falling at night so your body can rest, but habits like scrolling before bed, sleeping in a room with light exposure, or not getting enough sleep can make it harder for your body to fully wind down. Small changes really do add up: ✔️ Prioritize 7–9 hours of sleep ✔️ Sleep in a completely dark room ✔️ Get outside for morning sunlight ✔️ Limit screens before bed ✔️ Keep your bedroom cool ✔️ Make time to move and breathe The goal isn't to eliminate cortisol; it's to support your body's natural rhythm so you can sleep deeper, wake up feeling more refreshed, and give your body the recovery it needs. 🌙 by @otterspacesleep

How I was meant to exist: ✨ Sleeping through the night. ✨ Waking up feeling rested. ✨ Not being interrupted by the sun at 6 a.m. or a streetlight shining through the window. Turns out, creating a room that's actually 100% dark changes everything. Once you experience sleep without the light leaks, it's hard to imagine going back. Who else feels like they were always meant to sleep in a cave? 🌙🖤 by @otterspacesleep
