Maroke Qadeem
@habzoud

The opening feels like an oud completely saturated with moisture. Within that humid character lies a deep bitter earthiness.

It reminds me of walking through the mountains just after the rain has stopped—the air is heavy with moisture, yet a bitter earthy scent runs through it.

As the oil develops, that initial bitter earthiness slowly unfolds, revealing a cooling, menthol-like note hidden within its core. The bitterness comes first, followed by a distinctly cold and refreshing sensation.

With more time, the heavy moisture of the opening gradually fades while the earthiness becomes stronger. At the same time, the cooling/menthol character intensifies until it begins to radiate almost like a cold flame of incense.

At times, the earthy character takes on the form of a dark, almost black resin. Yet within that dark core lies an intensely cold incense.

In the drydown, the cooling sensation remains alongside the distinctive texture of Maroke oud.

I still don’t have extensive experience with Maroke oud, but among the oud oils I’ve tried so far, Maroke Qadeem is the first to combine this level of projection with such a pronounced cooling sensation.

It carries an intensely humid and earthy character, yet at its center lies a powerful cold incense, blazing like a luminous supernova.

Such a wonderful oud. taken in Daejeon, South Korea by @oud_euikong

Maroke Royale 1982
@habzoud

The opening begins with a soft sweetness and a slightly deep, dusty texture. Within it, layers of purple florals remain hidden at first, slowly revealing themselves as the oil develops.

At the center is a distinct purple floral character. At times it feels like purple petals themselves; at others, like jasmine deeply steeped in sweet oud resin. Around it are impressions of iris and violet, with a faint edge of camphoric coolness and medicinal bitterness.

But what impresses me most is not any individual note.

Purple florals / resin / sweetness / bitterness / camphoric coolness.

All of these elements are present, yet they do not move separately. Their boundaries dissolve into one another until they become a single unified core.

There is an old parable about blind men encountering an elephant for the first time. Each touches only one part of the animal and tries to define the whole creature from that single fragment.

Trying to describe Maroke Royale 1982 note by note gives me a similar feeling.

The purple petals, jasmine, resin, sweetness, bitterness and camphoric coolness that I perceive are all parts of this oil. But none of them, individually, defines what this oil is.

That is why I do not want to define it simply as a “purple floral oud” or “an oud of jasmine, resin and camphor.”

The moment I do, I feel that I lose the whole.

There is, however, one thing I can say with certainty:

Yaaseen - Tigerwood 2025
@yaaseen.llc

It opens with a strong smoky character that immediately reminds me of burning oud chips. Rather than being just smoky, the smoke carries a distinct dry Tigerwood-like woody character, giving the whole profile a very dry and woody feel.

As it develops, the core remains quite consistent.
Smoke, dry wood, and incense stay at the center, with a pronounced burning-wood quality that feels direct and easy to recognize.

Compared with Suma Sumatra Incense, which I purchased alongside it, the direction may seem similar at first, but the character is clearly different. Suma develops a slightly bitter edge within the smoky incense, which gives it a bit more variation, while Tigerwood 2025 stays focused on a drier, more direct smoky woody incense profile without that bitterness.

It is not an oil that constantly shifts in many directions. Instead, it keeps its identity very clearly from beginning to end. taken in Daejeon, South Korea by @oud_euikong

Yaaseen — Suma Sumatra Incense
@yaaseen.llc

It opens with a powerful smoky incense character.
The smoke feels very realistic, almost like the scent of burning oud chips, with dense incense and actual smoke combining into a bold and forceful opening.

As it develops, a slightly bitter edge starts to emerge through the smoke, adding more dimension and preventing the profile from feeling completely one-note.

The smoky incense remains the core all the way through the drydown. It has a very clear identity from start to finish, with a distinctive character that feels like the smoke and incense of burning oud chips compressed into an oil. taken in Daejeon, South Korea by @oud_euikong

The Oud Lab — Papua 2003
@theoudlab

A vintage Papuan oud distilled in 2003.

The opening gives me humid rainforest, forest soil, ashy resin, and a deep green tartness. The green acidity does not feel simply leafy or herbal—it feels more like the vegetation of a damp rainforest absorbed into the oud itself.

As it settles, aged oud wood, deep resin, and clean incense become more grounded and defined. What stands out most is how the oud never turns thin with time. The woody core and resinous depth remain clear and persistent throughout the wear.

Rather than presenting each note separately, everything feels fused into one dense and complex oud accord.

Humid Soil / Rainforest / Deep Green Tartness / Aged Wood / Deep Resin / Clean Incense

There is very little animalic character here. To me, it feels like the earthy incense quality of an aged Merauke blended with the deep resinous woodiness of an old Malay oud. taken in Daejeon, South Korea by @oud_euikong

The Oud Lab — Kalbar 2019
@theoudlab

Dark, resinous, and deeply incense-driven from the opening.

What stands out most is the feeling of heated oud wood. It is not simply smoky, but more like dense, resinous wood being warmed until its darker character begins to rise. There is a slight bitterness running through the incense, with a deep resinous sweetness underneath.

At moments, it even reminds me of the slightly charred skin of a roasted sweet potato, which gives it a very unusual toasted quality.

I do not get much greenery, herbs, oakmoss, or anything strongly animalic here. For me, the core is very clear:

Dark Incense / Deep Resin / Bitter Oud / Heated Wood

Overall, it feels meditative, dark, and highly distinctive without becoming dirty or overly smoky.

AMOUAGE OUD ZUHAL
@amouageofficial

The opening is surprisingly spicy, dominated by Cardamom•Black Pepper. Black Pepper is especially important here, and it actually reminded me of the Black Pepper in Tom Ford Black Lacquer.

Underneath the spices sits a dark Leather•Resin Oud. The strong spice also tones down much of the animalic character of the Oud.

The transition from Black Pepper → Patchouli is remarkably smooth. As the spices fade, it feels like removing the outer wrapping and revealing the Oud Core underneath.

The heart is almost entirely Patchouli•Oud to my nose. The dark leathery Oud transforms into an Earthy Oud saturated with Patchouli Oil.

Finally, it settles into a heavy Ambery Oud, where I personally get a surprisingly strong Ambergris impression.

Cardamom•Black Pepper → Leather•Resin Oud → Patchouli•Earthy Oud → Ambery Oud•Ambergris

What I appreciate most about Oud Zuhal is how directly it presents the character of real Oud. While Silver Oud•King Blue feel more like perfumery interpretations of certain Oud facets, Oud Zuhal—especially after the spicy opening—does an excellent job of translating the Leather•Resin•Earthy character of Organic Assam Oud into a wearable perfume.

The Oud Lab — MERAUKE SHINRIN
@theoudlab

Trying Merauke Shinrin from The Oud Lab.

From the opening, I get a clean, humid woody scent with absolutely no animalic character.

It genuinely reminds me of an old tree in a forest just after the rain.

It feels quite different from the earthy or grass-heavy greenery I’ve experienced in some other oud oils.

As it develops, a subtle greenery begins to emerge from within the damp wood, along with a soft and slightly sweet woody character.

In the drydown, the initial dampness gradually fades, allowing the soft texture of the wood to become more prominent.

Overall, it evokes an old tree in a forest after rainfall, giving the scent an unusually clean and healthy feeling.

Rather than emphasizing the rougher side of Merauke oud, this feels focused on rain-soaked forest•humid aged wood•clean, soft oud. taken in Daejeon, South Korea by @oud_euikong

MesOUD — SHEBBO
@mesoud_fragrance

SHEBBO is a traditional attar created through a ten-day codistillation of eighteen natural materials in rose hydrosol, built around Indian and Sumatran oud alongside woods, resins, spices, and citrus.

The opening brings together citrus peel/bay leaf/ginger/frankincense, creating something both fresh and spicy. To my nose, ginger/frankincense form the core of the top.

As it develops, the bright citrus gradually recedes. More spices begin to emerge around the ginger and frankincense, while the overall texture becomes progressively drier.

Closer to the drydown, the Indian oud/woods underneath finally come forward.

This is where I find the structure most interesting. The oud forms a rounded center to the composition, while the various notes present from the opening feel finely seasoned around it. Rather than each material trying to stand apart, they settle naturally around the oud and become part of a cohesive whole. taken in Daejeon, South Korea by @oud_euikong

Oudique – Nha Trang 1991
@oudiqueofficial

The opening starts with a slightly bitter oud character carrying a subtly cool temperature.

At the very edge of that bitterness, a soft resinous sweetness begins to appear.

But this sweetness is nothing like honey or sugar.

It feels much closer to the dry, concentrated sweetness you might imagine from dried red fruit peel.

Almost as if red fruit skins had been slowly reduced into a dense resinous extract.

Then a bitter medicinal character and that cool sensation begin to overlap with the sweetness, giving the scent much more dimension.

If it were only the sweet red-fruit resin, I think the scent could have felt quite linear.

But the addition of bitter medicinal woods + a slightly camphoric coolness gives that red sweetness much more depth and contrast.

It is sweet without feeling sugary, and bitter without becoming heavy.

My first impression is bitter medicinal wood + dried red fruit peel + bittersweet resin + cool temperature + a slightly camphoric dimension.

Rather than a simple red-fruity oud, this feels much more dimensional, with sweetness + medicinal bitterness + coolness all projecting together. taken in Daejeon, South Korea by @oud_euikong

YUSA Aromatics — Hindi Qinan

The first thing that hits me is violet leaf.

It immediately caught my attention because this isn’t something I’ve really experienced in Hindi oud before. There’s a very light touch of citrus peel around the violet, with clean incense rising behind it.

It’s not as intensely cool as I expected. Instead, the violet floral+clean incense blend together naturally and create a subtle floral sweetness.

As time passes, the incense slowly settles down and the trail shifts toward a very clean resin. This is where I start getting a mineralic, slightly salty quality from the resin, which I find really interesting.

Later on, the incense sinks further into the background and a touch of Hindi leather starts showing through the florals.

But the leather is incredibly clean.

I barely get anything animalic from it. It feels more like a very soft layer of clean leather sitting underneath the violet floral. The leather itself is quite subtle, so the violet remains the main character throughout.

This is a beautifully clean and floral Hindi oud.

What really stands out to me is how unusual this combination feels. I still want to spend more time with it, but from these first wearings, it already feels like a profile that could be very difficult to replace in my collection.

Al Hind Oud — Crassna Maliki
@alhind.oud

An oil bringing together Crassna from Vietnam, Cambodia, and Thailand.

The opening immediately makes me think of golden, almost amber-brown tones.

Honeyed resin and warm amber form the core, with a warm leather nuance running through them. Perhaps because of the Cambodian oud in the blend, this part could almost be mistaken for something slightly animalic at first.

But the character soon changes.

A bittersweet, transparent woodiness begins to emerge, giving me the impression of a humid tropical rainforest. There is also a faint floral touch appearing in between.

What I find most interesting is that these different impressions do not simply melt into one another.

Golden amber•transparent rainforest woods•soft florals

They seem to take turns moving to the foreground.

Written down, these impressions almost sound contradictory, yet on skin they somehow connect naturally.

Perhaps that is the most fascinating part of combining Crassna from Vietnam, Cambodia, and Thailand — each region seems to reveal a different side of itself at different moments.

Rather than becoming blurred from having multiple origins, the oil feels as though it keeps switching between distinct expressions.

For me, that shifting character is what makes Crassna Maliki so interesting. taken in Daejeon, South Korea by @oud_euikong
