I’m really excited to share that very soon - on January 8th - music I wrote will be released for the first time.
It’s a mini instrumental album called 'Time'.

The album includes three pieces that I composed, performed, and recorded in a live session in Jerusalem.
With me (on the oud), very close friends - special, sensitive musicians who mean a lot to me.

Through these melodies, I’m trying to distill and sculpt my own experience of time - its fragments, its fine threads - with gentleness and intimacy.
Maybe that’s why it took me so long to record and release them?

♥️I invite you to follow, listen, and watch

Me and @oudan88 learned this piece a decade ago when we traveled to Crete to study music! 🇬🇷✨

We lived together in a house in the woods and spent every single day, from morning till night, in a workshop with the master Harris Lambrakis. This song has been stuck in our heads ever since, and we keep coming back to it. Now, you can finally hear it too!

Taking one of the most intense Indian classical/fusion tracks out there - "Chasing the Horizon" by the incredible Varijashree Venugopal! 🔥 @varijashree

Taking this insane complexity and bringing it to life on the Bass and Oud has been an absolute ride. This duo is just getting started, and we’ve got a lot more videos already on the way.

Make sure to follow, stay tuned, and join the journey! 🚀🎸

Back when I had just started performing, on every show day I couldn’t get myself to eat a thing. I was simply too excited.

When we’d get back to downtown Jerusalem after the show, usually late at night, I’d already be starving, and the only thing still open was the excessive 'chili pizza' on Hillel Street. I’d grab a few slices, and by morning my sensitive stomach would be paying the price.

With time, and as the excitement slowly turned into routine, I somehow forgot about that little tradition.

But this week, performing music I wrote, together with my senior partners Sarel Hacohen and Shoham Gabay, for the first time in Jerusalem, brought that feeling right back to my stomach. Maybe that’s exactly why this project is happening.

And sure enough, I found myself there again at midnight, paying Chili Pizza… and by morning, paying the price.

The excitement - and the stomach chaos - were worth it.

Thank you to Hamazkeka, my partners, and everyone who came to feel it with us ❤️

First trio show in Jerusalem
The city where we met, learned, created, and froze.

May 5th, 21:00 @mazkeka_venue
@sarelhacohen @shoham_ewind and I will play instrumental pieces (with a bit of vocals) I wrote on the oud - moving between past & future, reality & dream, tradition & individuality.

We’ll try to step away for a moment and connect. to time, to each other, and to you.
It’s not easy to play and listen these days, but it feels worth it.

Also, It’s been 3 months since our last show. we miss this, and we’d love to experience it with you ❤️

»Music, for me, reveals the emptiness of boundaries and definitions – in consciousness, in space, and in music itself.«

https://seismograf.org/en/playlist/my-name-idan-elmalem-would-you-see-my-playlist

Idan Elmalem is an oud player and composer working across #world and popular music, now presenting his debut instrumental EP and live performance project. Following years of collaboration within the Israeli music scene, he turns toward a more personal and intimate musical voice, blending traditional oud with a contemporary sensibility. Influenced by his studies with master Nissim Dakwar, Elmalem’s music explores the space between tradition and innovation. His debut EP, Time, features three live-recorded pieces that move between past, present, and future, combining classical Arabic and Persian elements with jazz, minimalism, and cinematic sound. Based in Tel Aviv, Elmalem draws on his Moroccan-Danish heritage in his work. He is a graduate of the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance and is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Ethnomusicology at the University of Haifa, alongside his work as a player and composer.

Bach's Invention No. 1, but make it Middle Eastern. 🎻🎸

@oudan88 and I decided to take this classical masterpiece for a little trip to the East. It’s half-serious, half-comedy, but all about the groove. It’s amazing how well Bach’s counterpoint sits with these oriental vibes!
