Dear Sistas and friends.

World Teacher’s Day is celebrated on October 5th globally. In this country that I live in, it is a shame that many racialized people don’t get to reap the benefits of attending school and as a result, having a teacher as positive people in their lives. As we recognize National Truth and Reconciliation Day in Canada the past trauma of residential school survivors still exists today and hence school is not seen as a psychologically safe place to be.

Let’s ask Safari what makes someone a great teacher 🤔👑🥳👏🏾🎊🫡.

A great teacher profoundly shapes a student’s lifelong academic success, personal confidence, and emotional well-being.

Academic and Cognitive Growth
• Boosted Achievement: Exceptional educators have the single greatest school-related impact on student learning and test performance.
• Better Executive Functioning: Strong student-teacher relationships in early grades improve student attention, motivation, and problem-solving skills.
• Informed Decision-Making: As highlighted by research from the Harvard Gazette, skilled teachers use cognitive development theories to anticipate student mistakes and guide learning in real time.

Personal and Social Development
• Increased Self-Esteem: Studies show that 83% of students report feeling a boost in confidence and self-esteem from encouraging teachers.
• Resilience and Adaptation: Great educators build non-cognitive strengths like self-regulation, helping students view challenges as growth opportunities rather than roadblocks.
• Mentorship and Vision: Around 75% of individuals view good teachers as role models who actively encourage their long-term dreams and career paths.
Long-Term Life Impact
• Higher Graduation Rates: Fostering a supportive classroom environment significantly increases the likelihood that at-risk students will graduate from high school.
• Lifelong Success: The social-emotional and academic foundation provided by a great teacher translates into long-term health, educational, and economic gains in adulthood. by @ourfearlessstory

Dear Sistas and friends.

September 30, Orange Shirt Day, now also known as National Day for Truth and Reconciliation (NDTR) is a day for all Canadians to commemorate and learn more about the history and legacy of the residential school system.

Orange Shirt Day has become an important opportunity for dialogue on anti-racism and anti-bullying. This day is meant to also encourage deeper reflection, learning and public dialogue on the relationship between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples.

It’s a day to honour the strength, dignity and advocacy of survivors and intergenerational survivors, by learning and talking about Indian Residential Schools and remembering the children who never came home.

More British Columbians are taking part in the day by:
💫Wearing an orange shirt to show that Every Child Matters
💫Attending local events
💫Reflecting on and learning more about the history and ongoing legacy of residential schools
💫Reading, watching and listening to Indigenous-created content
💫Supporting an Indigenous-owned business
💫Talking to family, friends and coworkers about reconciliation
💫Everyone is encouraged to seek out opportunities to take part in events wherever possible.

Orange Shirt Day grew out of Phyllis Webstad’s own experiences and the experiences of other residential school survivors who attended St. Joseph’s Mission Residential School near Williams Lake, B.C.

Dear Sistas and friends.

For those who live in Victoria, municipal elections are coming up soon on October 17, 2026. Please make the opportunity to go and vote. WHY?

Your vote is your voice. Voting for the candidate of your choice is a privilege of our democracy, and is not available to many people around the world. By casting your vote, you are:

💫 Choosing a candidate you think will best represent you and what’s important to you;
💫 Engaged and informed in the electoral process,
💫 Supporting democracy and everything it stands for
💫 Showing your responsibility and interest to how the country is running
💫 Stating a vested interest in the future of Canada
💫 Elections have been won by just a few votes, so every vote matters. Even if the candidate you choose does not win, your vote shows where your support lies and this can help shape the government’s decisions.

Dear Sistas and friends.

Happy Monday! In recent times, I have been intrigued by the use of Art to enhance public spaces. Sometimes Art can be fancy but it can be as simple as making a “Wish Tree” like what is there in the Quadra Village area. As I think of school aged kids and the power of affirmations and wishes, I think schools can create “Wish Trees” to uplift the mood of the students and overall learning atmosphere of the school while demonstrating camaraderie and encouraging attendance to school. What do you think? I think that it would be a phenomenal idea 💡👑🎯👏🏾🤩🫶🏿. Share your answers in the poll or comment below 👇🏾👇🏾👇🏾

I did a google search on safari about the benefits of public art and this is what came up.

Public art is important because it makes creative expression accessible to everyone outside the traditional walls of museums and galleries.

Benefits✨
💫Community Identity and Connection Reflects local history: Public art honors the shared heritage, culture, and values of a neighborhood.
💫Builds civic pride: Statues, murals, and installations turn ordinary streets and plazas into meaningful gathering spots.
💫Fosters social inclusion: It gives a visual voice to diverse community perspectives and encourages people to connect with their neighbors.
💫Economic and Urban Benefits Boosts local business: Attractive public spaces draw visitors who support nearby shops, hotels, and restaurants.
💫Improves urban design: Art softens hard concrete landscapes, making cities more vibrant, dynamic, and livable.
💫Supports creators: Commissioning outdoor pieces provides steady professional opportunities for local artists and builders.
💫Health and Awareness Enhances well-being: Seeing creative works in daily life reduces stress, boosts mood, and inspires fresh ways of thinking.
💫Sparks important conversations: Installations often draw attention to vital social, political, or environmental challenges.

Stay blessed and encouraged fam.

Dear Sistas and friends.

As I explore the neighborhood that I am in, what is written or drawn on the street poles are mainly illegible but i had noticed these stickers and found it interesting to be there. I would say that none of this child friendly or even suitable to be near a school. If really knew what the red dress symbolizes out here, it NOT anything positive.I would say it puts women in a poor light and perspective.

Dear Sistas and friends.

It is interesting walking through the Esquimalt neighborhood and seeing the various graffiti that most of time is too hard to read. This one was very clear, the word “MUST.” Well, coming from Caribbean culture this word is frequently used and enforced without thought. Maybe due to the fact we were descendants of slavery, the leadership/management/parenting style is autocratic so having a choice isn’t really an option. I had learned from a family violence training that you shouldn’t use this word or even have it in your print materials for survivors. The need to learn that they DO have a choice or voice in situations or around people who try to take their power.

True leadership means listening to the community, embracing creative risk - Nancy Noble, AGGV Director and CEO. To rephrase what she said in the latest issue of the Douglas Magazine about AGGV, I believe that “Esquimalt” should be a welcoming, accessible, and evolving space where everyone can experience the power of “POSITIVE” art. I would add even to be utilized as a campaign to deter unnecessary substance use and uplift the mood of residents and those who pass through the community to do business. These are modern times where there is nothing wrong doing facelifts to reflect the needs of persons who choose this community to raise their kids in, attend Francophone schools, and conduct a variety of business activities here.

I have been taking pictures of the various graffiti or graffiti art that are on the walls of businesses, street poles, bus stops, you name it and for the most part it’s toxic stuff that you really don’t need see or know as you are getting around town. I am glad to have opened my email today and see that there is a graffiti removal initiative happening in this area, starting with a wall by the Esquimalt High School🙌🏾🫶🏿👏🏾🥳🎊🎯🤗🫡💃🏽👑🤩.

Hey, are you guilty of excessively using the word MUST or being a controlling personality? I guess this post is for you 👏🏾🫵🏾

Dear Sistas and friends.

It’s September, and in Canada the fall season is coming. I happened to pass by a display for the Orange Shirt campaign at Old Navy. The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, originally and still colloquially known as Orange Shirt Day, is a Canadian day of memorial to recognize the atrocities and multi-generational effects of the Canadian Indian residential school system. It occurs every year on September 30.

The orange shirt represents the theft of culture, freedom, and self-esteem experienced by Indigenous children, alongside the message that Every Child Matters.

The movement was inspired by Phyllis Webstad, who was six years old when she went to a residential school in British Columbia. Her grandmother had given her a bright orange shirt, which was stripped away and taken from her upon arrival.

There are a few ways that you can participate in this awareness campaign. Purchase an authentic orange shirts that support Indigenous artists or charities. Put on an orange shirt or add an orange item to your outfit on September 30th to show public solidarity and awareness. Read survivor accounts, support Indigenous-led initiatives, and engage in meaningful discussions about reconciliation.

Dear Sistas and friends.

Help me out here, have you noticed that the artwork in the downtown core to be dark, scary, puzzling and drab? I really want things to get better with have murals or artistic designs that support the themes of:

👑Positive affirmations
👑Colourful imagery
👑Storytelling art spaces
👑Peaceful and impressive designs

People’s mental health and outlook on life can be positively supported and healed through artwork.
