Woolworths’ plan to axe Tasmanian beef has backfired, driving customers to local butchers and igniting a push to overhaul the state’s “broken” processing system. Our Mates Farm owner Matthew Tack is behind a push to improve slaughter options for farmers processing animals on farm.⁣

Walked into my local coffee shop on the way to town this morning and saw this on the front page of @themercury

Hats off to @matthewtack of @ourmatesfarm . He’s absolutely bloody right.

This — and so many other things in our food system — needs to change. We grow some of the best food in the world here in Tasmania. Surely we can create systems that actually work for the people growing it. Especially with the looming food insecurity chat.

If you don’t have a paper nearby, zoom in and have a read. This one matters-it affects us all.

We asked you all to go to your butchers and to hit your politicians up. So that’s what we did. We don’t care about parties, we want results for farmers and their communities. Go to the link Dean has setup below and share what it means to you, to your farm, to your community, for it to be easier for farmers to put food on Tassie plates. And if you get a chance, hit your local politician up. (Sorry about the sound we don’t have pro setup!) #movementnotamoment

Tasmanians have made their feelings pretty clear: we want to support Tasmanian farmers and buy Tasmanian produce.

Following Woolworths’ decision to stop stocking Tasmanian beef in its supermarkets, we’ve seen an incredible increase in support for local farmers and butchers as Tasmanians choose to buy their meat directly from them instead.

But the conversation can’t stop there.

Farmers like Matt and Cor from Our Mates' Farm in Geeveston still face a mountain of red tape and logistical barriers to getting their produce from the farm to Tasmanian families.

It was great to catch up and talk about the changes that could make their work easier and help get more Tassie produce onto our plates.

It’s time to listen to farmers, cut unnecessary red tape and let them get on with doing what they do best - producing food and supporting our communities.

Tasmanian farmers - we want to hear from you. What Government red tape is costing you time, money or unnecessary stress? See the link in bio to share your story. by @ourmatesfarm

💚We’re sad to say goodbye to all the wonderful customers who have been a part of the @tasproduceco community. Thank you for supporting all of us farmers, producers and makers these past few years.

A massive shoutout to the herculean efforts of our beloved @chezaorchard who has been the rock on which we all depended on - logistics /communications / marketing / relationships - you name it, she did it all!

Thank you to the TPC board (past and present, always unpaid yet fully committed to the cause). Big love to all the hub volunteers who have made each and every cycle happen in all the locations across Tassie.

We have been privileged to share our love of apples to the rest of our Apple Isle inhabitants. We hope you have tried varieties you’ve never seen elsewhere, and found your fave (ours remains the Mutsu!). We hope you have tasted each and every variety of apple pressed into our single varietal juices, and have enjoy it on ice, with soda water, as a sorbet, or with gin!

For those of you in the south, we continue to supply @eumarrah Hobart and @unpackedbulkwholefoods Kingston with our apples and juice, @scoopwholefoods_tas Sandy Bay has our juice. For those in the mid North, @karoolalla Farm and @forkitfarmtas stock our juice.

We will look at other northern options in the future, perhaps a Launnie stockist, and a trial at markets could be on the cards.🤞 As you know, freight & logistics can be a barrier for small producers (which is where TasProduceCo stepped up!). So we need to do our research, get organised, and plan for next season. Stay tuned, follow us on Instagram, we will do our best!
Thank you for everything TPC peeps!

Want to support more local producers but not sure where to start?

You don’t have to swap everything at once, just a few small changes can make a big difference! Here’s some ideas on how to slowly upgrade your pantry with Tasmanian-made staples:

✅ Next time you run out, replace it with local. Need more honey, olive oil, or sweet treat? Try a Tasmanian alternative when it’s time to restock.

✅ Start with one or two swaps. Regularly eat dumplings? Give local mushroom soy sauce a go. Have pancakes every Sunday? Try a grower made jam.

✅ Fresh is best! If you’re used to supermarket herbs, add some locally grown dried herbs to experience the flavour of peak season.

✅ Taste the difference – local ingredients are packed with more flavor. See if you notice a change in your cooking or play a fun game and blind taste local next to supermarket alternatives to see for yourself.

Every small step towards supporting Tassie producers counts.

We need to cut this red tape! Farmers currently cannot process their own meat on their farms. Today I spoke with Matt Tack @ourmatesfarm and Matthew Evans at @fat_pig_farm to support their calls to fix the legislation. It means better welfare for animals and better produce for Tasmanians. Let’s get it done. by @ourmatesfarm
