The Gorey details...Today, people know this Yarmouth Port home as the Edward Gorey Museum, but its beginnings were quite humble. Built circa 1820 as a Georgian full cape for Captain Edmund Hawes, it was aquired by Nathaniel Simpkins around 1825 after Hawes was lost at sea. Over the years, the home underwent "modernizations", with Victorian features added during the latter part of the 19th century. The glorious magnolia that fills the space along the south side of the house, found by Mrs. Simpkins on her trip to Mount Vernon, still stands, as does a replica of the house (now a private residence) that was built for a granddaughter in 1927. By 1979, the home, which was still in the Simpkins family, was run down and overgrown, which caught Edward Gorey's interest. He purchased the home, nicknaming it "the elephant house" ( because of its presence and a few whimsical interior touches), and lived there until his death in 2000. Along the Old King's Highway...The chestnuts are falling and scattering along the sidewalk. They have their place on our kitchen mantel alongside collected shells. An old folk remedy says that keeping them in your pocket will ward off winter ailments like colds, rheumatism and headaches. Now and then...Our Yarmouth Port Library was established in 1866, when a building formerly used as a law office, was moved to this piece of land offered by Henry C. Thacher. Mr. William Davis served as the first librarian. An early photo of the library shows arched Gothic windows and a tower to the rear, which was later removed after being declared unsafe. Along the way, there were further renovations, with two wings added in the 1950s and the front former window removed. A visit to our village post office brought such a smile to my face today.
