Happy Mother’s Day 💗

2018 began my biggest adventure yet. There were a lot of “you’ll need to slow down now” comments when I announced that I was pregnant. But these last few years have been my most fun, most traveled, and most adventurous!

Happy Mother’s Day to all of the moms out there!

Big Bend National Park ✨

My new favorite park?! This place was more incredible than I could have imagined.

We woke up early and made the trek from Carlsbad to Big Bend. Our first stop was the Persimmon Gap Visitor Center for restrooms and a Junior Ranger booklet.

Then we were off to Balanced Rock via Grapevine Hills (1.9 miles). ⚠️ Parking is tight and everyone wants a photo with the balanced rock so pack your patience. ⚠️ Be aware of your surroundings - we saw a woman fall into a cactus and get up with a leg covered in blood.

After Balanced Rock, we drove to Santa Elena Canyon 🤩 I wish we could have stayed all night. This spot is truly magical. You can do the hike (1.7 miles) or just play in the water.

The sun was setting so we ventured to Cottonwood General Store for dinner and then our rental at Study Butte RV park. Be sure to set aside time for star gazing 💫

In the morning, we got up early and drove to Big Bend Hot Springs Trail. We hiked in the dark and made it to the hot spring just as light was beginning to show.

After a nice long soak, we changed and stopped by the Rio Grande Village Visitor Center before heading to Boquillas Canyon Trail (1.4 miles).

Our last stop before heading to El Paso was the Panther Junction Visitor Center. Harper got her Junior Ranger badge and we got our usual haul of stickers and shirts. This park was a hard one to leave!

Before you go:
🔹check the NPS app for alerts and events
🔹no drones
🔹pack plenty of water
🔹leave no trace

Happy National Parks Week! 🏞️

Carlsbad Caverns National Park ✨

The second stop on our spring break trip. You’ll follow the road until you see the visitor center and the entrance to the cavern is there.

⚠️ We had 9:30 reservations and arrived just before 9:00. The line was HUGE! At least 200 people. Whether you have a reservation or not, you have to wait in the line. We didn’t get into the cavern until 10:00.

There is an elevator entrance or a trail entrance. With no line for the elevator, we opted for that. It was cool riding down 750 feet! Inside the cavern is amazing.

🔹check the NPS app for any alerts and events prior to visiting
🔹the temperature is 56° year-round so bring a jacket
🔹if you’ve worn your shoes in another cave, be sure to thoroughly clean them so that you don’t risk spreading white-nose syndrome to other bats
🔹please don’t be the visitors with flashlights that whip around in peoples faces like strobe lights

White Sands National Park ✨

Have you ever been sand-boarding or sand-sledding? This is the place to try it!

White Sands was the first stop on our spring break trip. We arrived early and walked the Dune Life Nature Trail (easy, 1 mile). When the visitor center opened at 9:00, we ventured back to rent sleds and boards from the gift shop. Definitely get the wax.

As you make your way along Dunes Drive, you can choose any picnic area to park and go sledding. Don’t go on marked trails and try to find a spot where you won’t go sliding into the parking lot.

We’ll be finding sand in everything we own for the rest of our lives but it was worth it!

This is your sign to book the trip ✨

In 2021, after being friends for 15 years, Supriya and I decided to start planning annual trips together. Then we asked ourselves, “what took us so long?!” Life happens and moves quickly. Don’t let moves, marriages, kids, or jobs get in the way of seeing your best friend.

Our trips far:
2021 - Frederick, MD (wine trail)
2022 - Lake Tahoe, CA
2023 - Santa Fe, NM
2024 - Acatenango and Lake Atitlan, Guatemala
2025 - Santa Barbara, CA

Where should we go in 2026?

Channel Islands National Park ✨

This little gem was more beautiful than I could have imagined! We started the morning by hopping on the Island Packers ferry to Santa Cruz. Then we met with Channel Islands Adventure Company for the Sea Caves Kayak Tour.

The tour kept us on the water for about 4 hours - it was incredible going in and out of the caves! After kayaking, we snacked, changed our shoes, and went on a hike to Potato Harbor. There was no cell service on the island, so we didn’t realize it was 5 miles 😅 we had to hustle to catch the last ferry back to Santa Barbara!

I would 100% go back. Have you been to Channel Islands National Park?

Olympic National Park ✨

I visited in late August, on a trip that included Mount Rainier and North Cascades.

After North Cascades, we drove to a cute farm that had two renovated cabooses on property. In the morning, we had breakfast at The Oak Table Cafe and then drove to the Hoh Rain Forest. We explored the trails, then made a pit stop to see the trucks from Twilight in Forks, and went to lunch at Westend Taproom. Before venturing back to the cabooses, we walked Rialto Beach.

Day 2 started with Oak Table again. Then off to canoe at Lake Crescent! Once we were off the lake, we ventured to hike Hurricane Hill via Hurricane Ridge (3.4 miles).

Olympic concluded our Washington National Park adventures. We made our way to Seattle for the night before a 6:00 AM flight the next morning. I had always heard that this is the most diverse park and that description was accurate!

North Cascades National Park ✨

I visited in late August, right after Mount Rainier National Park. This ended up being my favorite of the 3 national parks in Washington!

After Mount Rainier, we drove to a cute farmhouse that was our home-base for exploring North Cascades. In the morning, we had breakfast at Moe’s Darrington and then drove through the park to Blue Lake Trail (4.6 miles) that is just outside the park boundaries. After, we made a pit stop at Ross Lake, then went rafting on the Skagit River.

Day 2 started with Moe’s again. Then off to hike the Cascade Pass Trail (6.9 miles)! Once we were out of the switchbacks that felt like they would never end, the views were insane! This is the hike that made North Cascades my favorite park.

After Cascade Pass, we were off to Olympic! Have you been to North Cascades? This is one of the least visited national parks, coming in at 62/63.

Mount Rainier National Park ✨

I visited in late August (yes, I’m very behind) and absolutely loved it!

Day 1 began at Reflection Lake for sunrise (with my Sportea, of course). Then a hike to Panorama Point via Skyline Trail - approximately 4 miles. After the hike, we ate uncrustables at the car, followed by a walk down to Ruby Falls and Narada Falls. Parking was crazy throughout the park, so we opted to keep our spot and hike it. That night, we had dinner at Wildberry Restaurant.

Day 2 was the Mount Fremont Lookout hike (my favorite!). The trail via Sourdough Ridge is approximately 5.7 miles and 1,100 feet of elevation gain. Very doable and WORTH IT! After the hike, we took the Mount Rainier Gondola to have lunch on Crystal Mountain.

Then off to North Cascades!

Whale watching off the coast of Húsavík 🐳

We arrived in Húsavík on a Sunday afternoon, soaked at GeoSea, had dinner at Salka, and checked into our rental apartment.

In the morning, we made our way to Lókal Bistro for breakfast and then North Sailing for a whale watching tour.

*Parking is free for 3 hours through the Parka app or you can park in the lot near the church that is free all day*

We lucked out and had a calm day on the water (tours earlier in the week were cancelled due to storms). Even though the waves were calm, they are still BIG and continuously roll. If you’re prone to motion sickness, take a Dramamine beforehand. Some people did not… 🤢

It was incredible to see the humpback whales so close! We would 100% do this again. Would you go whale watching in Iceland?
