Flying to the top of Mt Erebus in Antarctica.

We flew over the sea ice, slowly gaining altitude. This meandering climb lent plenty of time for sight seeing!

We were on a mission to check the gear located at one of the survival apples (small hut-like structure), which gets used by scientists in the summer time.

We explored the Erebus Glacier Tongue, a glacier that spills into ocean from the bottom of Mt. Erebus (an active volcano). For half the year, when the sea ice has formed up (1+meters deep), you can access the glacier tongue by vehicle by traversing the sea ice and then by foot.

This cave/crevasse was as blue as it looks! We easily fit 10 people in here and had heaps of space to walk around.

The “Observation Tube”, aka “The Ob Tube”.

This narrow tube is installed into the sea ice so that people can climb down and use the 360 viewing area to look at the sea ice from below.

While I was down there, I saw a seal swim past, and heard their psychedelic calls, which were other worldly. This day was totally a highlight!

I had worked intimately with the sea ice on top- assessing sea ice cracks and the movement of the ice, so it was special to see what was happening beneath!

Checking sea ice cracks in Antarctica.

As a Field Safety Coordinator, it is our job to assess whether or not a crack in the sea ice is safe to drive over. This can be determined by measuring the depth of the ice and width of the crack.
