& @diokaminaris present the IGER OF THE DAY (VIDEO) of March 16, 2024 🏛 ICONIC 🏛 The building of the Parthenon was a technologically innovative and amazing project. The ancients managed to mine, transport and lift huge volumes of marble from Penteli, on the rock of the Acropolis, in the middle of the era, which are still impressive today. At least 20 thousand tons of Pentelian marble were used for the construction of the Parthenon. To be able to transport these huge volumes, the ancient craftsmen built the “Lithagogias Street”. The Parthenon was built over an earlier temple of Athena, which was destroyed by the Persians during the Persian Wars. In more detail: It is believed that there existed from the Geometric years (7th century BC), in the place where the Parthenon was built, a brick temple on a stone foundation. In the 6th century an ancient temple was built which was decorated with ancient sculptures that are exhibited in the Acropolis Museum, (lions and Hercules with Triton). After the battle of Marathon, in 490 BC, a marble temple began to be built around the Vor-Parthenon, but it was destroyed in 480 BC. from the Persians. The Parthenon was built on the site of this temple. It began to be built in 447 BC. and the building works were finished in just nine (9) years (a record time for the time) that is, in 438 BC. The decoration works started in 438 and ended in 432 BC. The architects of the temple were Iktinos, who also built the temple of Apollo in Phigalea, and Kallikrates, architect of the Temple of Nike and perhaps of Erechtheion, while the sculptor Phidias was responsible for the decoration and general supervision of the work (“ bishop of all”, as Plutarch mentions). & @diokaminaris present the IGER OF THE DAY (VIDEO) of January 26, 2024 💦 RECORD 💦 On the slopes of Tzoumerka, near the village Melissourgoi, and at the location of Kefalovryso, you can find, the highest waterfall in Greece, as according to research its length exceeds 300 meters. In essence, these are two twins waterfalls that run through the steep and imposing vertical rocks of Tzoumerka, with one of the two never freezing - something that led to the name «waterfall» . The second is more superficial, its waters come mainly from the melting of ice, while during the summer it dries up completely. & @diokaminaris present the PHOTO OF THE (VIDEO) of January 24, 2024 🐧 The stone bridge of Konitsa is the second largest single-arch bridge in Epirus. The bridge was designed and constructed by Ziogas Frontzos from the village of Pyrsogianni, in 1870. It is located near the town of Konitsa in northwestern Greece, not far from the Albanian border. The location where it is found is captivating with the Aoos river flowing under its arch and the impressing Aoos gorge to stand behind it. The charming single-arched bridge is 20m high and 35m in length, which could quite well make it the largest single arch bridge in the Balkans. It still preserves under its arch the bell that warned for the powerful winds that rendered the crossing dangerous. Although narrow, is wide enough for pedestrians and livestock to pass from one side to the other. In the same place, Dimitrios Liabeis together with other residents of Konitsa built a wooden bridge in 1823, which collapsed in 1833. The same year, Panagiotis Skoubourdis and Vassilios Masios rebuilt the wooden bridge, but it also fell a few years later. So, in 1870 it was decided to build a stone bridge.  When the Turkish Army left Konitsa, it attempted to blow it up, but they did not succeed. The elegant bridge managed to survive and to be one of the area’s main attractions nowadays. & @diokaminaris present the ORIGINAL SHOT (VIDEO) of January 24, 2024 ❄️ AT THE EDGE ❄️ Vikos is one of the 46 villages of Zagori and is located within the Vikos-Aoos National Forest, literally on the edge of the Gorge. Vikos provides a magnificent view of the Vikos gorge (as you can see on this video as well) and it has obviously taken its name after the gorge. This place is a common starting point for walks along the gorge and has many footpaths leading to great places, such as the downhill springs of the Voidomatis River, at 20 minutes distance on foot. These footsteps also lead to the church of Panagia Spiliotissa (Virgin Mary of the Cave). & @diokaminaris present the IGER OF THE DAY (VIDEO) of January 24, 2024 ❄️ TOTAL WHITE ❄️ Papigo is one of the 46 villages of Zagori and is located within the Vikos-Aoos National Forest, 59 km northeast of Ioannina. It is divided into two “mahalades”, Megalo and Mikro Papigo, which are built at the foot of Astraka and are about 2 km apart. Megalo Papigo is at an altitude of 900 m and Mikro Papigo at 980 m. The mountain range of Tymfis (Gamila) dominates the entire village, forming the Aoos ravine to the north and the Vikos gorge to the southwest with the Voidomatis river. To get first to Megalo and then to Mikro Papigo, one has to pass through Aristi and the “barrels” - the winding road with 14 sharp turns. With many guest houses, boutique hotels and high-end restaurants, Papigo, which has been designated as a Protected Settlement of Special Callus, is high on the list of preferences of those visiting Zagorochoria, both in winter for romantic getaways and in spring or summer for sports and endless walks in nature. & @diokaminaris present the PHOTO OF THE DAY (VIDEO) of January 22, 2024 🎭 Dodoni, the largest ancient theater in Greece from above 🎭 The Ancient Theater of Dodoni is located 22 km from the city of Ioannina. Its construction was connected with the performance of the temples, which were games in honor of Zeus. In the Roman period, the theater was transformed into an arena for gladiators and animal fights and duels. It is estimated that it was built in the 3rd century BC, during the reign of Pyrrhus in Epirus. Restoration work after disasters began in 1875 and continues to this day. It is one of the largest ancient theaters in Greece, as its capacity reaches 17,000 spectators. The hollow of the theater was placed at the foot of Mount Tomaros to take advantage of the natural slope of the ground and the basic building material used was limestone.
