Happy National Public Lands Day! The suspension bridge over the North Branch of the Peabody River marks the start of the trail that eventually leads into the Great Gulf Wilderness of the White Mountain National Forest. Did you know official wilderness areas have minimal trail signage and markers? As designated wilderness areas, USFS personnel are also limited to using only hand tools to maintain trails and build structures like bridges. Further on this trail, you officially enter the Great Gulf Wilderness. There’s a bridge within it on the AT that has been marked as unsafe, resulting in an AT reroute. Repairing the bridge would require that all materials be hiked in and no power tools could be used in construction. Keep the wild places WILD!

We hiked out to the dune bogs to check on the cranberries. Some are barren. A few are full, but only the tops are ripe. They need a few weeks before foraging.

Never in all of the miles I have walked by the ocean have I seen a thresher shark. One minute, it wasn’t there. The next, I looked up and thought the pectoral fins were a loggerhead sea turtle’s and it was stuck on its back. My heart and legs went into action-but what I found 10 yards from where I was sitting was this sadly deceased beauty.

The artist and scientist in me marveled at its scythe-shaped tail (about half the length of its body-sharks are measured snout to tail tip) and coloring. They use the tail like a whip to stun schooling fish. Overall, it was about 10’-twice my size. They can reach up to 30’ in length and are considered quite shy. The skin was breathtaking-an iridescent purple which you can see most clearly in the video. And although from what I read, their skin is rough, it felt smooth as glass where I touched it (maybe I only touched it in one direction?)

There was a wound underneath somewhere (there was some blood) and I hope it wasn’t from a boat strike or other human caused reason. Ten minutes later, a series of large waves picked it up, turned it over, and reclaimed it just past the tidal shelf, where it sank and silently drifted on the southerly current. It was like it was never there.

A half hour earlier, I had retrieved an inflated mylar balloon from the water’s edge and some other trash in the wrack. I really wanted to share the photos-because wonders like these are what live in our ocean and we need to protect it. What a beautiful creature. Rest easy.

Edit: because so many asked, this was on Ballston in Truro, MA on Cape Cod. It is no longer on the beach. by @outermoststacey

🌲🚨Please read + share! 🚨 We have until September 21 to voice our support to keep The Roadless Rule. If you have ever spent time in New Hampshire’s White Mountains, the wild areas you love inside the National Forest are at risk (as well as many other wilderness areas across the country). According to Regulations.gov, “The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA or Department) is proposing to rescind the 2001 Roadless Area Conservation Rule (2001 Roadless Rule), which established broad prohibitions on road construction, road reconstruction, and timber harvesting within inventoried roadless areas on National Forest System lands.” These include areas within WMNF including Franconia Ridge, the Great Gulf Wilderness and many more.

🌲Roads could be built in wilderness areas, recreational opportunities impacted, the quiet solitude we seek altered, wildlife and natural resources, like timber, challenged.

🌲There is a link in my bio to the page where you can submit a public comment to the Government. At the top of the webpage, there is a blue box to tap to post your comment. Use your voice to state substantive facts. Share statistics. Include your personal connection to the Whites. Tell the government to “keep the Roadless Rule as is” to preserve our wild places. Try not to copy/paste other letters—as duplicates, and/or foul language will most likely get your comment thrown out. Call your leaders in Congress. Share this post with others or simply text or email the link to the Regulations.gov page with friends and encourage them to comment.
