I’ve been following Marshall Allen and @sunraarkestraofficial for 15 years. I tell anyone I meet that there is no purer form of joy than to see them live and I mean it when I say Marshall Allen is my hero. I was at his 84th birthday, his 90th birthday and now his 99th! 99! I followed the Arkestra from New York to Baltimore and then Philadelphia with a big smile on my face and some of my dearest friends along for the ride.

Go see Marshall. We don’t deserve him.

Motion.

Slowly, at first by accident, and then with encouragement from my peers (@snackkingcole @kellamity_james) and teachers (@maciocephotography) motion became a practice for me. Finding the works of Ming Smith and diving deeper into what motion can express - especially when capturing free music. Being inspired by the two handed painting of @artsforart stalwart Jeff Schlanger (www.musicwitness.com). I don’t know what it means, but I dig it.

I first met Kidd Jordan on a pilgrimage to the Velvet Lounge during the Chicago Jazz Festival in 2008 - a year that featured both Sonny Rollins and Ornette Coleman. Among those giants, the gentle fervor of the music Fred Anderson and Kidd made stuck with me. I moved to New York in 2009 and became a part of the @artsforart Vision Festival crew, only to find Kidd was a mainstay of the festival.

Everybody loved Kidd. He had a childlike glint in his eye, a big smile and great laugh. But he was serious about the music. He’d seen Coltrane play in his youth and it had forever changed him. I was blessed to hear him play over and over again at the festival and each time I was more and more blown away by his strength and sensitivity. Looking back at the pictures I have of him playing with Fred Anderson, Hammiett Bluiett, Charles Gayle and Dave Burrel it’s like there’s no one else in the world at that moment. He’s stopping low with Fred or pounding on Burrell’s piano or laughing loud with Archie Shepp.

Without taking away from his own music - I’d never heard anyone play the blues like Kidd - I feel that along with Pharoah, Kidd was the closest I got to hearing Coltrane. Those moments were sacred. I won’t forget in 2018 when he came on stage at the Vision Festival, played his heart out and said goodbye to the audience that had loved him so deeply for all these years. We were all crying, but it took a lot of strength and sensitivity to do that. Kidd was my hero and I wish commercial success wasn’t the barometer for impact. Because if moving hearts was, Kidd would be triple platinum.
