A co-founder — with François Vadepied — of Wagon Landscaping in 2010, Mathieu Gontier trained initially in fine arts, combined with Russian-language studies. He graduated from the École nationale supérieure de paysage in Versailles in 2007, and is today head of studies at the school’s Marseille campus. In his teaching, he describes an approach to design that is ‘grounded in observation, drawing, and engagement with the realities of each site’.

From this background, he retains a strong reliance on drawing as a core tool for thinking and designing — not merely as a means of representation, but as a way to explore and construct a project. This concept of designing, gardening and building, all at the same time, remains at the heart of Wagon’s philosophical and practical approach.

Mathieu oversees projects in the Paris region and in southern France, with a particular focus on grounding each intervention in its territorial and cultural context. He says that his practice is ‘based on a careful reading of sites, attentive to existing forms, uses, and perceptions. Landscape is approached as a process of measured transformation, revealing the qualities of a place while accommodating new uses.’

We look forward to welcoming Mathieu and Francois to the ALC in March, 2027

François Vadepied co-founded Wagon Landscaping in 2010 with Mathieu Gontier. His work, and that of the practice as a whole, is grounded in a hands-on approach that is attentive to real situations and to the gradual transformation of places.

With a background in geophysics and geographic information systems, François spent 15 years in digital cartography before shifting his career toward landscape. He graduated from the École nationale supérieure de paysage in Versailles in 2007 (where he teaches today). Since then, he has developed a practice that ranges from large-scale territorial studies to the careful cultivation of small plots.

François says that his approach is closer to that of a landscape gardener than a conventional landscape architect, in that, ‘it is based on a deep understanding of soils, plant dynamics, and long-term processes of change. Projects are not conceived as fixed forms, but as evolving frameworks capable of accommodating living systems and everyday uses. This position favours observation, adaptation, and frugality, seeking to build upon existing conditions rather than replace them. It results in restrained interventions, where design supports natural dynamics and daily practices.’

We look forward to welcoming Francois and Mathieu to the ALC in March.

One of the most arresting voices on the international landscape-architecture scene, Claire Martin is not afraid to ask difficult questions of both the profession and of the culture more widely.
She has identified, ‘accelerating technologies, shifting behaviours, climate volatility, biodiversity loss, and widening social inequality and isolation’ as some of the defining issues of our age. But she also notes that, ‘chaos . . . can also bring clarity: sudden events — environmental, cultural, or technological — reveal new needs and desires that can challenge our assumptions and expand our imagination. They remind us that people are increasingly looking for embodied and collective experiences over virtual, and individual.’

Claire is an associate Director at OCULUS, known for her systems approach across a range of scales, from insect hotels to public spaces, through to state-wide greening strategies.

With a career spanning nearly two decades, Claire has curated projects across Australia and is a past president of the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects. taken in Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC) by @outlandishventures

As a co-founder of San Francisco-based Surface Design, James A. Lord has cultivated a design practice rooted in the belief that landscape is both a reflection of place and a medium through which to explore the relationship between ecology, culture and human life. In this spirit, Lord was one of the master planners of the Sydney Olympic Games in 2000.

According to Lord, in its work Surface Design aims to, ‘push against the conventions of globalised sameness, favouring landscapes with distinct character—eccentric, expressive, and often unexpected’. With a place-based approach and a keen sensitivity to context, Lord’s aim is to explore the point of intersection between innovation, rigour, and imagination, approaching each project as an opportunity to examine the forces that shape landscapes over time.

Lord extends his practice beyond the studio through teaching, lecturing, and dialogue, most recently at the Harvard Graduate School of Design, where Surface’s studio, “Fireworks,” explored fire as both a destructive force and a generative ecological process. Lord says his intention is, ‘to advance landscape architecture as a discipline of exploration, stewardship, and possibility—one that embraces uncertainty as a catalyst for innovation’.

James Lord is presenting at the Australian Landscape Conference in March 2027.

Roderick Wyllie is a founding principal of San Francisco-based landscape architecture studio Surface Design, alongside James A. Lord.
After a stint at the City of Sydney, and then Peter Walker and Partners, early in Wyllie’s career, the practice emerged from a deeply held belief that meaningful landscapes are born from a profound and holistic understanding of place.
Much like an anthropologist, Wyllie approaches landscape as a layered narrative, which he describes as, ‘peeling back the strata of material, geology, climate, ecology and culture, while listening for the stories and whispers embedded within each site’.

Drawing inspiration from the poetics of art, music, and craft, Wyllie has helped cultivate a practice that approaches each project as an ongoing dialogue between ecology, material and tectonics. His work explores the delicate exchange between natural systems and human intervention, whether through the design of public landscapes or private gardens. Wyllie sees landscapes as living expressions—simultaneously wild and cultivated, adaptive and resilient, and deeply emblematic of the communities and ecologies from which they emerge.

Roderick will be presenting at the Australian Landscape Conference in March, 2027.

We are looking forward to hearing from Carolyn Robinson, a gardener and garden designer based on the New England Tablelands. Over three decades she has created two significant gardens — Glenrock and Eagles Bluff — and worked with clients across southern Queensland and northern New South Wales. These gardens will be open for their last time this October.

Carolyn's first book, 'A Garden Is Not a Painting' takes its title from the realisation that ‘a garden is alive, full of life and ever-changing — lived with, dynamic, adapted and reshaped over time.’ Carolyn describes how to read a place before planting it, how to garden for drought without surrendering beauty, and why the gardens that move us are almost always the ones shaped by a single pair of hands.

Driven by the question of, ‘how one orchestrates the dynamism of nature in a garden setting’, Andy Hamilton places plants at the centre of his design practice. ‘We work with a light touch regarding built form within the landscape,’ he explains. ‘Regardless of the geographical context or the scale of our gardens, we put planting centre-stage, creating immersive green spaces that are dynamic throughout the seasons and evolving throughout the years. Hard landscaping has the biggest financial and ecological cost — so being disciplined in how we use built elements in our gardens is crucial.’

Having trained in Auckland, Andy moved to the UK in 2005 and spent ten years as an associate in Tom Stuart-Smith’s landscape design company. In 2015 he moved back to New Zealand and set up his own practice, with a portfolio that includes a mix of urban and rural projects, spanning the temperate-subtropical climate in the far north to the alpine regions of the deep south.

Andy will be presenting at the ALC27
