Congrats to @luka_lamaj and @docereapp for winning the @ryersondmz Basecamp $10k prize!

If you don’t think public speaking matters as much as your ideas, think again 😎 Luka is a brilliant speaker and his passion was evident when I worked with him and the rest of the Basecamp program.

His idea (a video platform connecting doctors and patients to make healthcare more accessible) is fantastic; but if his pitch wasn’t equally good, no one would know!

Kudos to Luka and all the awesome students I had the pleasure of coaching!

SMALL BUSINESS HIGHLIGHT 💡

I met Nina during my visit to Connecticut and Massachusetts, specifically in Boston. I saw her bags and immediately wanted one for my wife. We got to talking and I loved her personality and entrepreneurial hustle!

@ninawazerowasteclothes is a Boston local. She makes “upcycled” tote bags, using existing textiles to create reusable bags and reduce plastic waste.

“Each bag has a story” she said. 😁

If you live in or visit Boston, you can find her near the Harbour or downtown selling her beautiful tote bags!

🐅It’s how we exchanged life or death information while we were cave people.

📊So… use it talk about your business and life, and WEAVE those two narratives together.

How to ENGAGE your audience! 🧐

Human beings have something called MIRROR NEURONS, which are also called empathetic neurons.

It’s the reason why we feel other people’s pain or take on their emotions.

Knowing this, you can affect your audience in positive ways.

If you want them to be engaged and excited, then you should APPEAR (and ideally BE) engaged and excited 😃

Do you try to do this when speaking, or do you worry about being too “fake”, or “salesy“?

The GOLDEN RULE of public speaking 🏅:

When you are speaking in front of people, virtually or in person, it's easy to let your mind spin out of control.

"Are they engaged? Am I doing a good job? Do my clothes look stupid? Am I rambling? What was I supposed to say about this part? Oh my god, I'm a fraud, I suck, NO ONE WILL EVER LOVE ME!!"

Ok that last part is an exaggeration. But you get the point.

I like to call this the golden rule of speaking: Make them UNDERSTAND and make them CARE. That's it. Simple. Don't think about too many things, just focus on these two intentions and it will make you much more effective, and much less anxious.
