Apparently, I’ve been a cookie monster since birth.

I have always loved cake and cookies, so naturally my grandma made sure my birthday cake reflected my priorities in life.

I have absolutely NO idea how old I was here, but judging by the snaggle tooth, I was clearly going through a very important phase of my dental career.

Look at that cake. Look at that smile. Look at those teeth.
I was living my best Cookie Monster life before I even knew what a midlife crisis was.

Some things really haven’t changed… I’m still here for the cake and cookies. 💙🍪

Back in 1987, I decided to step WAY outside my wallflower comfort zone and enter a beauty pageant.

I was PAINFULLY shy back then—quiet as a church mouse—and entering a pageant was definitely NOT something that came naturally to me. But somehow, I found the courage to try… and I actually placed 4th out of 10!

What makes this photo even more special to me is my mom. Our family of six didn’t have a lot of money, but my mom (Gaye) was incredibly supportive and patient with me. I wanted to feel beautiful and have a beautiful dress, so she found this one for me from JCPenney not your typical fancy pageant dress and she even sacrificed to have my hair professionally done.

That was a big deal for our family, and it’s a sacrifice I’ve never forgotten.

And yes… I still have the trophy. (Pictured below)

Looking at this picture all these years later, I realize it represents so much more than a sash, a dress, and a trophy. It represents quiet courage and my mother’s sacrifice.

That shy little wallflower was brave enough to step onto a stage and try something completely outside her comfort zone.

And look at me now.

I’m still that girl… just bolder, louder, and with a whole lot more sparkle.

I carry that same little spark with me into everything I do today, only now I have a lot more confidence behind it.

And that little trophy? It still sits as a reminder that sometimes you just have to be brave enough to try.

Because you never know what you’re capable of until you step outside your comfort zone.
