Pleasant Bay, Orleans. This seemingly peaceful and “pleasant bay” has a varied maritime geology of shifting inlets over its 6,000 year history. It is the largest estuary on Cape Cod. Major storms and barrier beach dynamics have altered the bay’s geography. Sandy islands have come and gone, washing away, only to reorganize downstream or erode into the mighty Atlantic. In 1986, the towns of Chatham, Orleans, Harwich, and Brewster received ACEC (Area of Critical Environmental Concern) designation to protect the 9,000-acre ecosystem. Modern preservation efforts through the Friends of Pleasant Bay and the Harwich Conservation Trust continue their efforts to preserve major watershed buffers, such as the Pleasant Bay Woodlands and manage adjoining water quality and nitrogen mitigation.

Chatham Splendor! The beauty of Chatham can best be seen from above. This coastal seascape is a canvas of realism and abstract forms — well defined and familiar landmarks on land transition to diffuse and surreal shapes of sand near the water’s surface. In the foreground, Tern Island, situated across the Fisherman’s Pier clearly displays this phenomenon… Like a drop of ink dissolving in water, the coast seems to dissolve away into streaking sands across the water, forever changing shape. This panorama can best be appreciated from the air.

The spectacular Cape Cod National Golf Club in Brewster is a relatively new course in the chain of Cape Cod golf courses. What started out as an 85 acre, 9-hole course in 1994, founded by John Pfeffer, and his wife Linda, then expanded to 154 acres by 1995. Brian Silva of the architectural firm of Cornish, Silva, & Mungeam designed a world-class 18-hole course. By 1997, the Wadsworth Construction Co. had moved 750,000 tons of dirt to shape the course, and 850,000 square feet of sod covered the greens. The course opened on June 24, 1998.

An aerial over Chatham Lighthouse (1808). So many of us are captivated by lighthouses on the Cape. They have all been replaced over time, rather than being demolished to the annals of history. Lighthouses symbolize many things to different people. They conjure guidance, protection, hope and resilience, solitude, return, mystery, vigilance, innovation, and inspiration.
I’ve always been fascinated by lighthouses. Whenever I fly over the Cape & Islands, I always try to capture at least a few lighthouses.
A solitary boat pierces the channel leading to Chatham Harbor. One the last peaceful images at summer's end...

This September surprise Nor’easter reminds us of the perils that lurk along the Cape shores. With each storm, there is never a lack of collateral damage to property, boats, utilities, and people. There have been many questions and interest about the grounding of the fishing vessel, “Miss Rockville,” since the February 2026 Nor’easter. Many don’t know that it still lies along the northern tip of what is now Monomoy. Apparently, all the fuel onboard has been pumped out. As far as I know, the vessel has not been salvaged. It’s deemed a total loss.
Prayers go out to the families that incurred this unfortunate loss. We are often consumed with recreation and vacation when regarding the Cape & Islands. Chatham fisherman, as well as fisherman from Provincetown, Wellfleet, and all over the Cape, and beyond, are truly among unsung heroes of the modern era.

The 44-foot bay scallop dragger, identified as Miss Rockville, broke free from its mooring during the late February blizzard of Hernando. It was grounded along the outer sandbar off South Beach Island near Monomoy, Chatham. The mighty Atlantic has claimed 3,000 ships over the Cape’s 300 year maritime history along these treacherous outer shores. Dangerous shoals produce shifting sandbars around these outer beaches and are constantly on the move. Powerful storms during the winter nor’easters bring near-zero visibility and violent seas. In this case, however, the mother nature’s forces were great enough to break free a moored ship, causing it to run aground.

Eastward Ho, Chatham, in the late afternoon. It’s difficult to imagine that this was once a Naval Air Station from 1917 to 1922 at the end of Eastward Ho. Blimps were launched to patrol the northeast. In 1922, the base was closed, the entire peninsula was opened for development, Eastward Ho Golf Course consumes the foreground.

It has been a busy few years, but I’m happy to announce that I’m resuming new and exciting aerial adventures along the Cape & Islands and beyond…
The elbow of Cape Cod is made of the barrier islands of North and South Monomoy, South Beach Island, and Morris Island. By far, this is my favorite place on earth to photograph. Every time I fly, I pay homage to this part of the Cape. This wondrous seascape is an 8 mile stretch of pristine dunes, freshwater ponds, marshes, ocean, and a wilderness refuge. The 7,604-acre Monomoy National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1944, providing a vital habitat for resting, nesting, and feeding of migratory birds, including the protected piping plover and roseate tern. In full display are the inland and coastal wetlands, plants, grasslands, and barrier beaches.
