Calling the Black Queer Folks! Here is a lil save the date if you will, to kick off the comeback of the Black Queer Silent Read series.

This Sunday August 23rd is our first silent read since last Nov!

We’re so excited as we’ve been behind the scenes working to lock this in for us, for the community, and now here we are. So please mark your calendars and show out as we come together to read for a whole hour.

Are you in a book club? Bet, come on down and get through some of those chapters.

Have you been meaning to open that book this Summer but haven’t? Here is your sign!

The cost is donation based, so it can be as low as $1!

RSVP link is in the bio! DM if you have any questions.

what is JCLC? oh glad you asked! it’s an acronym for Joint Conference of Librarians of Color, a council held within the American Library Association, and they hosted their conference this October in WA state!

I was excited since it was in my home state and absolutely wanted to network with my fellow librarians of color. This conference happens every 4 years and it was my first time attending as a librarian!

American Library Association is the annual national conference for library workers! It’s a great time to meet folks from around the world and share ideas with one another. I was fortunate to attend for the first time in 2024 as an ALA Spectrum Scholar, and then for the 2nd time in 2025 as an ALA Emerging Leader. I had so much fun making new library friends, and grew in my appreciation for the craft. Can’t wait to see the highlights from my peers going this year and looking forward to attending in 2027. In the meantime, who’s coming to my hometown for the Joint Council of Librarians of Color conference ??? 👀 @americanlibraryassociation @jclc2026

as a public library worker it’s unreal the diverse ask we get at the reference desk! the patron here was vague but serious and i tried my best to capture her concern. we ended with identifying her local animal services unit to support her wildlife inquiry.

how would you answer this?!

as i’ve continued to grow in my adult reading journey, i’ve noticed how much anxiety my body holds by the idea of just being still and consuming a novel. i think i’m still unpacking this feeling, but really it’s a stressor that says “hey you have so much other crap you need to get done, you literally can not read right now”. i choose to dull that voice, and the way that has felt most transformative has been shinrin-yoku (nature bathing). in all honesty i didn’t know there was a term or practice, but i am also not surprised. really i just felt more called to sit with trees and receive. almost like this unspoken chastising that would loosely go something like this:

tree: “ali, sit down and do nothing.”
me: “but i need to….”
tree: “sit.”
me: “ah, but i am sad and want to doom scroll.”
tree: …
me: *sits down*

and then the quiet that stillness brings arrives. and my body starts to feel at ease and restful. i start to feel refueled. like a dead battery laying spread eagle on a charging port. and then i start to remember. i remember that i like being alive and smelling fresh air. i remember i like feeling safe and protected. i remember that i am okay, that it will be okay, and that i need to keep going. and i remember that i can return here anytime.

reading truly is a privilege. i see that, and i was taught not to take it for granted.

reading as an adult has become somewhat of a healing journey really. i still don’t “feel” like i have time to read. on the other side, parts of me “feel” guilty that i do have time to read. as an overthinker, taking myself outside allows me to clear my mind, so that my nervous system can relax into whatever literary world i’m diving into.

does this happen for other folks? or does reading feel more peaceful initially?
