~ CURRENT EXHIBITION ~ “IN PROTEST AND IN CARE” ~ Work by Victor Vejle

As part of the group exhibition “IN PROTEST AND IN CARE”, visual artist Victor Vejle contributes with the sculptural work “Sign”.

Victor Vejle’s site-specific installation ”Sign” (2026) places a set of wooden stairs, winding up into nowhere, in the entryway of the exhibition space. Sourced from a construction company in Poland, the readymade structure extends the entrance’s existing architectural barrier. As both obstacle and symbol, the work questions accessibility and the promise of stairs as structures of movement, progress, and overcoming.

“IN PROTEST AND IN CARE” is on show through 25 October.

As part of the group exhibition “IN PROTEST AND IN CARE”, visual artist Frida Lisa Carstensen Jersø contributes with the sculptural installation “Ellen Marie, Bertine, Troels, Rebecca, anonym, Linda, Kristine, Anna, anonym og Tina”.

Frida Lisa Carstensen Jersø’s sculptural installation ”Ellen Marie, Bertine, Troels, Rebecca, anonymous, Linda, Kristine, Anna, anonymous, and Tina” (2026), consists of bronze casts of spinal implants belonging to people with spinal cord injuries. Cast from medical scans, each differs in size and shape, emphasizing the individuality of disability and the varied experiences behind medical intervention. The work is echoed by the sculpture “The Broken Back” (2026), cast from Jersø’s own spinal implant, placed in the cityscape at the location of the accident that led to her paralysis.

~ NOW ON SHOW ~ “IN PROTEST AND IN CARE” ~ Work by Panetha Abareshi

As part of the group exhibition “IN PROTEST AND IN CARE”, artist Panetha Abareshi contributes with the work “NEW ARTIFACTS [ii]”

”NEW ARTIFACTS [ii] (2025”) by Panteha Abareshi consists of six bleached vertebrae pierced with numerous pieces of metal jewelry. The bone appears purified, like an anatomical exhibit, but the piercings make it ornamental—something to be looked at and wanted, slipping between speci- men and spectacle. The vertebra is the body at its most reduced, stripped of flesh, identity, and autonomy. It is also an image of pain that cuts to the bone, and a suggestion that self-inflicted pain may be one way of negotiating the pain of illness and of being looked at.

“IN PROTEST AND IN CARE” is on show through 25 October.

~ CURRENT EXHIBITION ~ “IN PROTEST AND IN CARE” ~ Work by Alex Dolores Salerno

As part of the group exhibition “IN PROTEST AND IN CARE”, artist Alex Dolores Salerno contributes with the installation “semilla santa”

“semilla santa” (2025-ongoing) is a site-specific installation made from chains of green (unroasted) and roasted coffee beans installed as a curtain that marks the entrance to the exhibition. Asssembled together with brass onto chains that resembles prayer beads and functions as a stimming tool, the work foregrounds neurodivergent embodiment, sensory grounding, spirituality, and sustainability, while confronting coffee’s violent colonial history and challenging coffee’s association with capitalist productivity and exploitation.

“IN PROTEST AND IN CARE” is on show through 25 October.

~ NOW ON SHOW ~ Bruno Zhu: “Women Upstairs”—on show through 25 October 2026 ~

Accompanying the exhibition is an essay by Rhea Dall, Director and Chief Curator at O—Overgaden. Here’s an excerpt:

”There’s a small artwork by Bruno Zhu that I really like.* It’s a model of a penis. Or rather, it’s a sewing pattern, cut from white card and covered in penned instructions (as sewing patterns often are), designed to come together to form a penis-shaped garment. And not just any penis: it is part of a series where each rendition is scaled to the average size in the country it is exhibited in.

I like this work because it draws Bruno’s artistic practice together in multiple ways. It’s about modeling and models (he once studied fashion)—an unpicking of the standard sizes that we all adhere to, or measure ourselves against. This is not unlike the nude mannequins, sourced in Denmark for his show at O—Overgaden: commercial prototypes, each shaped by a different style or era. And not unlike the standardized pictographic figure running toward the door on the green exit signs that supervise and direct us the world over, even in states of exception.”

* The work in question, which is not part of the exhibition at O—Overgaden, is "American Average Star" (2022).

Entry to O—Overgaden is, as always, free.

Opening hours:
Tuesday, Wednesday: 1–6pm
Thursday: 1–8pm

~ Now on show ~ “IN PROTEST AND IN CARE” ~ Work by Rikke Benborg

As part of the group exhibition “IN PROTEST AND IN CARE”, visual artist Rikke Benborg contributes with the video work “Hysterics”

The video work “Hysterics” (2017) takes as its starting point the historical diagnosis of hysteria, associated with the female body since antiquity, and studied across 19th-century European medicine, most significantly at the Salpêtrière Hospital in Paris, where the neurologist Jean-Martin Charcot documented and photographed women's physical reactions, categorizing them as medical symptoms and staging them before an audience in his public lectures. Drawing on this history, Benborg examines hysteria as a bodily and cultural phenomenon. In collaboration with the dance collective FANCLUB, dancer Mejse Vedel, and sound artist Lærke Sødring, the work explores the movements and physical expressions historically associated with hysterical fits.

Through a performative approach, the video revisits bodily gestures recorded in medical archives and considers how they can be understood both as symptoms and as forms of resistance. Hysterics highlights how women’s emotional expressions and bodily reactions have been interpreted, controlled, and pathologized over time.

“IN PROTEST AND IN CARE” is on show through 25 October.

~ CURRENT EXHIBITION ~ “IN PROTEST AND IN CARE” ~ Work by Jesse Darling

As part of the group exhibition “IN PROTEST AND IN CARE”, visual artist Jesse Darling contributes with the work “Epistemologies 2”

In “Epistemologies 2” (2018), a small metal shelf stands pressed against a wall, overflowing with worn ring binders in gray, black, and faded bright colours. The binders are stacked, squeezed, and shoved into the system until the structure begins to give way. The shelf tilts slightly in the middle, and its flimsy legs are bent, as if it is about to collapse under the weight of the “knowledge system” it supports.
The work materializes knowledge as something physical, heavy, and unstable. The ring binders, as administrative containers for documentation, classification, and control, represent the systems through which the world is organized and understood. Yet the structure meant to ensure clarity and stability appears fragile and close to collapse.

The work points to epistemology as an institutional practice, raising questions of who defines what counts as knowledge and which bodies and experiences are archived or pushed out of the system. Its near-collapse can be read as both a protest against hierarchies of knowledge and an insistence on exposing the burdens these systems place on marginalized bodies.

~ CULTURE NIGHT at O—OVERGADEN THIS FRIDAY ~ Lego-building Workshop ~ Come and Build with Us! ~

Please join us this Friday, 9 October, for Culture Night 2026, as O—Overgaden invites visitors of all ages to a creative Lego-building workshop inspired by the current exhibition "IN PROTEST AND IN CARE", which brings together experiences and perspectives from artists living with, among other things, disabilities and chronic illness.

As O—Overgaden is a listed building and is not wheelchair accessible, we will use collective play to build a Lego ramp through the building’s main staircase. The ramp serves as a creative starting point for discussing how accessibility is imagined—and, not least, how it is built.

The project will be realized in collaboration with Magnus Klint Sørensen, architect and winner of the first season of LEGO Masters Denmark, and ginger naps, a researcher, artist, and accessibility activist whose work focuses on disability culture, critical accessibility, and archives. The project is initiated by visual artist and accessibility activist Anna Walther, one of the exhibiting artists in “IN PROTEST AND IN CARE”.

Admission to O—Overgaden’s exhibitions is, as always, free.

~ Free drinks for the first 100 guests ~

PROGRAM ~ Friday 9 October:
6pm–midnight: The two current exhibitions, “IN PROTEST AND IN CARE” and Bruno Zhu’s “Women Upstairs”, are open. The bar will be open, serving cold drinks.
6–10pm: Lego-building workshop

~ NOW ON SHOW ~ “IN PROTEST AND IN CARE” ~ Work by Marie Kølbek Iversen

As part of the group exhibition “IN PROTEST AND IN CARE”, visual artist Marie Kølbek Iversen contributes with the work “Den Lille Havfrue (Signed Meditation)”.

In Marie Kølbæk Iversen’s experience, losing the ability to hear one’s own voice is one of the most striking and invasive aspects of becoming deaf, and she contributes a meditation to the exhibition that synthesizes her own experience as a “deaf- gainer” with the mythologized transformation of The Little Mermaid. The meditation is performed by the artist herself in nuanced yet broken Danish Sign Language, which she is currently learning as a con- sequence of her progressive hearing loss. Aimed at both Deaf and hearing audiences, the performance inverts hierarchies of the hearing majority, as the meditation itself is sign-mediated and subsequently translated into spoken language. On display in the exhibition is a hand-painted poster for the medita- tion, which takes place on September 19 following a panel discussion on deafness and hearing loss.

“IN PROTEST AND IN CARE” is on show through 25 October.
