Your presence is requested for the opening of 𝘎𝘢𝘯𝘰𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘮𝘢—the second solo exhibition by artist Owen Geary at NAD Gallery @narukiartdojo

The exhibition features a collection of works on dried fungus, using a painting technique developed by the artist. 𝘎𝘢𝘯𝘰𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘮𝘢 proposes a new visual language to describe complex living networks growing beneath Earth’s surface.

The exhibition will be on view at the gallery from August 29 through September 13, with an opening reception on Saturday, August 29, from 6–9 PM.

Due to private painting classes taking place at NAD, the gallery will be open by appointment only outside of the opening and closing events. taken in New York City by @owenhub

TURLEY welcomes guest curator, Peter Kelly this month with his exhibition Block Universe. Kelly has organized a thought provoking group exhibition featuring an exciting group of intergenerational artists, exploring our past, present and future experiences.

Block Universe presents an inter-generational group of artists operating from an omnitemporal perspective: faith****, Pap Souleye Fall, Vanessa Gully Santiago, Owen Geary, Timothy Hull, Steve Keister, Emily Drew Miller, Viraj Mithani, Nereida Patricia, and Ernesto Renda.

Block Universe Theory is a philosophical view of time that posits the past, present, and future exist simultaneously as a stagnant “object,” the appearance of time is created when consciousness travels through this unchanging body. It envisions the universe as a four-dimensional block, where time is a dimension akin to space.

🍄‍🟫🫧🪶🪱 Thank you all who came to 𝘎𝘢𝘯𝘰𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘮𝘢 at @narukiartdojo NAD Gallery, now closed and packed away. And thank you to Naruki who helped me with the process!

I will not be making any more painted mushrooms, as it is time to evolve. 🧫🔬

But fungi are the future, and the art world should reflect that. Mycoremediation is the process of using fungus to break down and metabolize pollutants and metals. 𝘍𝘶𝘴𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘶𝘮 𝘰𝘹𝘺𝘴𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘶𝘮 produce powerful enzymes that breakdown hydrocarbons and absorb mercury. 𝘊𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘶𝘴 𝘷𝘪𝘰𝘭𝘢𝘤𝘦𝘶𝘴, which are a bright purple color, degrades petroleum, and is widely used in oil spills to rehabilitate land. After Texaco and Chevron badly damaged the soil of Sucumbíos province in Norther Ecuador with years of violent natural oil extraction, local ecological groups turned to mycoremediation to simplify and digest toxins left in the land - to positive results! In recent years mycologists in Yunnan have found fungi that seemingly metabolizes plastic, despite plastic being introduced to the area less than one hundred years ago.

The mushroom was harvested in Washington State last year in the forest near @its.isadora and @scout.hines home, it traveled to New Hampshire to dry for 9 months with my mother before I painted in my Brooklyn studio. 📦🚚🍄‍🟫

this summer while at residency in Woodstock I told @eeeyoin all I wanted was to see or hear an owl before I finished the program. On one of the last nights we sat with a group in a field past midnight and very slowly an owl conversation began around us from the trees. I imagined this mushroom growing out of the mycelium as documentation of those owl stories.

I was hiding away in Woodstock at @air_byrdcliffe for the month and have many things to share. I’ve been foraging in the woods for mushrooms, painting in my studio, and looking for rattlesnakes on the mountain trail. Very fruitful time

The show summarizes many years of research but specifically from the spring of 2025 when I was really imagining a subterranean oil painting culture, like a canon of underground organisms. Source materials from: Algernon Blackwood, Murray Bookchin, Reza Negarestani, Nina Simone, Anohni and the Johnsons + a gallery publication I got of the Blacklips Performance Cult retrospective show at Participant, Klaus Nomi, Kenojuak Ashevak, Jenny Hval’s book Girls Against God, Tokuzō Tanaka films, and all my underworldist friends 🖤

afterwards I’m gonna move on from mushrooms, I need a new thing to obsess over. please come Aug 29 if you can but also don’t stress
