Some History:
The Owl Tree at 601 Post Street has been a licensed drinking establishment since the repeal of Prohibition in 1933, but its legend truly began when New Yorker Robert “Bobby” Cook took over in the 1970s. Bobby had spent two decades saving up his waiter wages at Gino’s restaurant until he could finally open a bar of his own.

As a boy hiking in the woods, Bobby had crossed paths with a friendly owl and considered it a lifelong good luck omen. He leaned into that omen completely. For over 30 years, C. Bobby’s Owl Tree was packed floor to ceiling with owl paintings, sculptures, stained glass fixtures, knickknacks, and stuffed owls staring down at every patron. Members of the nearby Bohemian Club, whose mascot is also an owl, regularly drifted over and gifted Bobby even more.

Bobby ran a no-nonsense room. If you sat too long without talking, he would tell you directly : “You’re not contributing anything to this conversation. Go sit at the other end of the bar.” He passed away in September 2006 at age 75, reportedly mixing martinis for regulars just hours before checking into the hospital.

In 2008 the bar was sold and fully remodeled with dark mahogany, red carpeting, and black leather booths. The owl mosaic on the exterior stayed. A few owls remained inside. The name never changed.
