It’s been a few days now, but I’m still at a complete loss after hearing about the passing of my brother, Seam. I’m still trying to process it, it just doesn’t feel real. I can’t believe you’re gone. i first came to Miami sometime in the summer of ’85 or ’86, I can’t remember exactly which year. I still remember my uncle driving us down I-95, and out of the corner of my eye, I caught a glimpse of a rooftop with some bold black-and-white pieces. Every time we passed that spot aka the Bakehouse, I’d press my face against the car window, trying to get a better look. Eventually, I made out the letters: S-E-A-M.
That was my first introduction to Miami graffiti. And to me, as a kid visiting from out of town, Seam was Miami—and he always will be. About six years later, I finally met him in person.
It was the early ’90s at the Hialeah Penit. I was there to paint a piece and had brought a few friends—non-writers who were filming footage for Video Graf. Anyone who remembers that spot knows you had to park across the tracks and walk in. As we headed down the tracks, I spotted a few guys hanging near the single entrance, it was before the loading dock gate was opened up, so that was the only way in back then.
I told my crew, “We’ve got company up ahead.” The guys were watching us closely. When we got closer, there were four of them posted up, looking like they were guarding the place, or waiting for trouble, lol. One of them asked the classic question: “Whatchu write?”
I think it was either Seam or Dash. I told them my name, where I was from—Jersey—and just like that, the tension dropped. We started vibing, exchanging phone numbers, and that moment turned into the start of a lifelong friendship. Those four—Seam, Dash, Pen, and Arcade (who was visiting from New Orleans), were the first Miami writers I ever met after moving here. by @owsiw
