EDIT: Guys this is my opinion and NOT A REVIEW POST, but a snippet of random quotes that I didn’t love in the book. A full review would be far more nuanced and critical rather than this, which is literally a dumb joke. I’m no longer responding to comments and im so sorry if this offended you. I’m so glad that you enjoyed a book that i didn’t and I’m in no way saying that you shouldn’t enjoy this book. A three star review is not bad and please don’t think I hate Andy weir or this book!

D.H. Lawrence’s “The Rainbow” has always been considered widely controversial. Having been banned due to somewhat explicit sexuality (including queerness), this book is one that was far ahead of its time, especially for its publication in 1915.

The story follows three generations of women: Lydia Lensky, Anna Lensky, and finally, Ursula Brangwen. The majority of the novel follows Ursula— who is also the subject of the sequel, Women in Love. Ursula is what you would call the modern woman. She has a distaste for the idea of marriage, children, and we see her in the novel fill out a job appication and work for money. However, this does not stop the book from being a critique on modernism and industrialism. Throughout the novel it becomes apparent that D.H. Lawrence views the modern society as a form of imprisonment, which he refers to as “machinery” and he believes that the men in the novel are cycles of submission to these structures.

The women, however, are uniquely crafted and far more complex than most women written in 20th century modernist literature. They break free— or at least recognize the flaws— in the systems that so many others fall into without question. These systems including religion, industrialist jobs, and even war.

The novel is an incredible feat of work that will definitely take you time to read. It’s varied reviews make it a hit or miss for most readers. However, if you have the time and the dedication, this book has the potential to blow you away and introduce you to a new world of classic lit.
