Yesterday at approximately 5:35 PM, Oxnard Fire, Gold Coast Fire, and Federal Fire responded to a reported working structure fire at a residence on Kipling Place in Oxnard.

Upon arrival, firefighters found the home with heavy smoke coming from the garage and visible flames. Crews immediately began working to gain access to the garage, ultimately dismantling the garage door to reach the fire.

The fire had extended beyond the garage and into the interior of the home, causing significant fire and smoke damage throughout the structure. Firefighters worked aggressively to contain the fire and prevent further extension.

The fire was declared knocked down at approximately 7:15 PM, with crews remaining on scene to conduct overhaul and check for any remaining hot spots.

After roughly another hour of overhaul operations, firefighters cleared the scene. The home sustained extensive smoke and fire damage, leaving it uninhabitable.

NEWS RELEASE: Oxnard Fire Chief Alexander Hamilton Announces Retirement; Battalion Chief John Albin Appointed Next Fire Chief

OXNARD, Calif. – Oxnard Fire Chief Alexander Hamilton announced today that following 21 years of service in Oxnard, he will retire on November 19, 2026. As part of the department’s leadership transition, City Manager Alexander Nguyen is appointing Battalion Chief John Albin as the department’s next Fire Chief.

“Even before Alex became Oxnard's Fire Chief, he was bringing innovation to the department, especially for increased awareness around cancer-causing conditions and prevention, and mental health and suicide prevention care for public safety personnel,” said Nguyen. “As Oxnard's Chief, one of his highlights is advocating for the creation of Oxnard's EMS Corps program, which will serve our community for generations to come.”

Albin brings over three decades of fire service experience to the role, including 28 years with the Oxnard Fire Department. He joined the department as a firefighter in 1998 and rose through the ranks, promoting from Firefighter to Fire Engineer in 2002, Fire Captain in 2011 and Battalion Chief in 2025, when he was selected to establish and lead the department's newly created Support Services Division, which manages fleet, facilities, technology, logistics, purchasing, and peer support.

Since 2013, Albin has helped build and lead the department's Peer Support Program, and serves as a statewide Subject Matter Expert on firefighter peer-based suicide awareness. He is also a member of the department’s Urban Search and Rescue Team and has commanded crews on the Maria, Mountain, and Palisades incidents. He previously served in leadership roles in the Oxnard Firefighters Association. Albin holds a bachelor's degree in Urban and Regional Planning from UC Santa Barbara and completed the California Fire Chiefs Association Fire Chiefs Academy in 2026.

NEWS RELEASE: City of Oxnard to Host “Prep in the Park” Event to Help Families with Disaster and El Niño Storm Preparedness Efforts

Free event features hands-on preparedness activities, demonstrations and giveaways

OXNARD, Calif. – The City of Oxnard will host a disaster preparedness event, “Prep in the Park,” on Saturday, September 26, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at College Park, 3250 S. Rose Ave. The free, family-friendly event will make emergency preparedness simple and accessible, and comes as forecasters predict a very strong El Niño this winter, which increases the potential for significant rain and flooding.

The event takes place during National Preparedness Month, which is a nationwide preparedness campaign led by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) each September. Hosted by the Oxnard Fire Department and in partnership with the Oxnard Police Department, the City’s Cultural and Community Services Department, and the American Red Cross, “Prep in the Park” will give families an opportunity to learn practical emergency skills through hands-on activities, interactive games, and demonstrations.

“Families can easily take simple, cost-free steps to enhance their emergency readiness,” emphasized Mayor Luis Mc Arthur. “Oxnard’s ‘Prep in the Park’ event is a fantastic opportunity for our community to come together, acquire vital preparedness skills, and connect with emergency responders. We encourage Oxnard families to join us and see how simple it is to be prepared.”

Event attendees can explore four interactive activity zones focused on fire safety, disaster readiness, life-saving skills, and pet preparedness. Activities include an earthquake simulator, hands-only CPR and basic first aid training, fire extinguisher practice, disaster preparedness games, kids’ obstacle courses, pet first aid, and opportunities to meet local first responders and their K9 partners.
