La inigualable, La yi yi yi…¡La Lupe! The queen of latin soul.

The fiercest voice. The passionate performances. La Lupe was fire in human form. She didn’t sing; she cried, tore off her clothes, and threw herself into the music like it might save her soul. La Lupe was raw, divine, and unapologetically black!

Here are some of my favorite tracks of hers:

“Oriente” - a killer track, performed with Tito Puente’s orchestra. Here, she playfully sings that Tito kicked her out of the band to be replaced by Celia Cruz!

“Puro Teatro”

“Si Tu No Vienes”

“Qué Te Pedí”

“Fever”

El “Ray” Criollo by Ray Barretto. Originally released on United Artists in 1966, this is the West Side Latino Records reissue from 1975.

This is still very much a charanga album with violin and flute throughout, but it also showcases Barretto’s transition to hard-hitting brass, including the fiery guaguanco “Margie”.

“Yo te doy si tienes la razón
Para guarachar
Para vacilar…”

Fun fact: the vocalist, Willie Garcia, is best known as La Lupe’s husband.
