Since three months now, the people of Hong Kong are protesting, every Sunday, against a newly proposed bill, which would make extraditions from HongKong to mainland China possible.
.
The protests arose over concerns that such legislation would blur the demarcation between the legal systems in Hong Kong and China. Hong Kong is a special administrative zone (they have their own laws, currency, language and freedom of press and speech) China has agreed to give the region a high degree of autonomy and to preserve its economic and social systems for 50 years from the date of the handover from british colonisers in 1996.
.
Therefore Hong Kong is supposed to fully become part of China in the year of 2046.
Almost every person I spoke to in Hong Kong didn’t want that to happen, the Protests are thereby also a fight for Hong Kong’s independence.
.
The Protest I witnessed yesterday had two faces:
.
For the first four hours it was a huge march of 450.000 people, who really seemed to be a cross section of society.
.
For the next four hours, after leaving the admitted route, a few hundred, mainly young protesters, well armored and wrapped up, battled on the streets with the heavily armed police.
.
.
PICTURE 1: Around midnight, more radical protesters clashed with the police, who used tear gas, which was condemned by some human-rights-organisations as disproportional.
.
PICTURE 2: My main impression from yesterday is the massive amount of people protesting.
A camera-man who was filming the march from the roof, I took this picture of, told me that he had been standing there for three hours, but still hadn’t seen the end of the march once.
.
PICTURE 3: Even at night there were still some peaceful protesters. Like this group of elderly people, who were walking the streets, singing and handing out flowers.
.
PICTURE 4: the main message of the protest: No extradition to China!
.
PICTURE 5: Damage to public and government property is the radical protesters most frequent form of action.
.
PICTURE 6: 450.000! The biggest protest I have ever seen, but only the 3rd biggest protest in Hong Kong within the last three months. On June 16 they were 2 million!
