POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Since three months now, the people of Hong Kong are protesting, every Sunday, against a newly proposed bill, which would make extraditions from HongKong to mainland China possible.
.
The protests arose over concerns that such legislation would blur the demarcation between the legal systems in Hong Kong and China. Hong Kong is a special administrative zone (they have their own laws, currency, language and freedom of press and speech) China has agreed to give the region a high degree of autonomy and to preserve its economic and social systems for 50 years from the date of the handover from british colonisers in 1996.
.
Therefore Hong Kong is supposed to fully become part of China in the year of 2046.
Almost every person I spoke to in Hong Kong didn’t want that to happen, the Protests are thereby also a fight for Hong Kong’s independence.
.
The Protest I witnessed yesterday had two faces:
.
For the first four hours it was a huge march of 450.000 people, who really seemed to be a cross section of society.
.
For the next four hours, after leaving the admitted route, a few hundred, mainly young protesters, well armored and wrapped up, battled on the streets with the heavily armed police.
.
.
PICTURE 1: Around midnight, more radical protesters clashed with the police, who used tear gas, which was condemned by some human-rights-organisations as disproportional.
.
PICTURE 2: My main impression from yesterday is the massive amount of people protesting.
A camera-man who was filming the march from the roof, I took this picture of, told me that he had been standing there for three hours, but still hadn’t seen the end of the march once.
.
PICTURE 3: Even at night there were still some peaceful protesters. Like this group of elderly people, who were walking the streets, singing and handing out flowers.
.
PICTURE 4: the main message of the protest: No extradition to China!
.
PICTURE 5: Damage to public and government property is the radical protesters most frequent form of action.
.
PICTURE 6: 450.000! The biggest protest I have ever seen, but only the 3rd biggest protest in Hong Kong within the last three months. On June 16 they were 2 million! taken in Hong Kong by @david.distel

At the beginning of this year, in January 2020, I had the great luck to be able to capture this special moment with my camera.
At that time I was still on my big journey, I was in the north-west of India, more precisely in Jaipur in the Indian Rajasthan.
Jaipur is also called the "Pink City", because the buildings of the old town are painted in a matte rosé color.
It is an extremely lively city, as you can probably tell by the street in the background of the picture, through which cars, rickshaws, mopeds, pedestrians and sometimes even horse-drawn carriages crowd together.
In order to escape the hustle and bustle and the noise and stench that came with it, I decided to watch the sunset from a low roof in the jewelry manufacturing district of the city that evening.
I was not surprised to meet some elderly gentlemen there, because in Jaipur it is not unusual to avoid the street tumult on the roofs of the city.
I was astonished though how trustingly the otherwise cheeky but shy city monkeys interacted with the gentlemen.
Especially the man on the photo knew how to handle the monkeys so well that one of them even dared to sit on his lap and eat out of his hand.
Because the memory of this magical moment at the golden hour above the roofs of Jaipur will stay with me forever thanks to this picture, it is one of my absolute favorite photos.
Swipe right to see what the picture would look like, if Instagram would finally allow us to post in full size. taken in Jaipur, Rajasthan by @david.distel

Ich kandidiere als Politische Geschäftsführung (PolGf) der @gj_bayern ! 💚

🦔 by @david.distel

🗣️ @karokoes unsere Sprecherin sagt dazu:

2/4: Today we want to introduce you to the second tutor of the 2024 @lmu.muenchen National Model United Nations delegation: @david.distel 🇺🇳

He is studying Politics, English and Philosophy to become a teacher and was part of the @nmunlmu delegation that represented Australia in New York in 2023. About his time there he says:

"The NMUN conference in New York gave me the unique experience of discussing solutions to global challenges with inspiring young people from all over the world, some of whom I became friends with."

If you too want to have such an enriching experience, apply to be part of the NMUN 2024 delegation from July 31-August 6, 2023 via the Moodle Exam.
Any questions left? We will be hosting an info-zoom on 07/26/2023 starting at 18:00.

Alerta! ✊

English:

I cannot accept that here in Munich people demonstrate shoulder to shoulder with neo-Nazis, conspiracy theorists and anti-Semites against Corona measures. Because in this way their hatred is made acceptable again, the limits of what can be said are pushed further and further.

But: We are so many more! The silent majority is just becoming the loud majority!

This was also in the air during the speech I gave last night in the name of @gjmuenchen at a @muenchensolidarisch-Protest.

The Vietnamese Father Christmas?

This Buddhist monk in a temple in northern Vietnam is dressed completely differently from the Burmese monks in the picture I posted yesterday. I find local and interpretational differences within Buddhism extremely fascinating. In general, it is exciting to observe how religions shape the world view of people and thus entire societies. Similarities and differences can be discovered at every corner when travelling overland and thus experiencing the flowing transitions between cultures.

Oh and don’t forget to buy my 2021 Calendar, . All profit will be donated to @seawatchcrew I still take orders until tomorrow evening. taken in Ninh Bình by @david.distel

“The Buddhist Beatles”, 2019

Taken at the 2600 Years old Sule Pagode in Yangon, Myanmar’s most famous Buddhist stupa.
The monks are constantly walking around the temple praying, hundreds come every evening to worship and meditate. It truly is a place of extraordinary spirituality.

Also there are still some of my 2021 calendars left!
If you just invested 12€ there could be 12 beautiful pictures decorating your living room in the coming year. 😏

The Monks on the picture would probably advise you to buy one, because all profit will be donated to @seawatchcrew which can’t be bad for your Karma. taken in Yangon by @david.distel
