Lesbian, gay, or bisexual identification among younger U.S. high school students has fallen sharply, according to CDC Youth Risk Behavior Survey data analyzed by San Diego State University psychologist Jean Twenge and reported by The Washington Post. Among ninth-grade girls, LGB identification dropped from 30% in 2021 to 17% in 2025. Bisexual identification in that group fell by half, from 26% to 13%. Among ninth-graders overall, LGB identification fell from 17% in 2023 to 11% in 2025. Twenge said the change "really does look like a free fall," but that the cause is unclear. The CDC's 2025 YRBS is a nationally representative survey of students in grades 9–12. Coverage citing the agency's data guide put the usable sample at 10,710 questionnaires from 108 schools (30.6% overall response rate). Twenge's percentages exclude students who chose another identity, were unsure, or said they did not understand the question. The Williams Institute's Jody Herman cautioned that Twenge's write-up did not include confidence intervals.
