Yesterday Nicki Minaj, a recent addition to the MAGA party, appeared at a Trump rally in Michigan wearing a two-piece Gucci monogram suit with matching Gucci Horsebit ‘Donna’ pumps. Netizens took note, especially after seeing the brand’s Spring ‘27 show which seemed to feature cartoonish nods to modern American conservative glamour. Looks 11 and 12, for example, reeked of First Lady Melania Trump, who has been seen in Gucci and Gucci-esque looks in recent years. Demna Gvasalia, Gucci’s current Creative Director, is famous for his ironic (or post-ironic?) design approach, often showing high-fashion subversions of tackiness, gaudiness, and class. Therefore, his play at sending what appeared to be Melania facsimile’s down Gucci’s runway could be read as typical IYKYK performance art. But what happens when the performance becomes real life? The release of Kering’s Q3 earnings reports caused a stir in the industry last week after they revealed bleak results for the group’s prestigious design houses. Gucci stood out in particular for an almost 10% slump in sales year-over-year, as well as its reported worst Q3 in the past decade, which includes that of 2020. Gucci’s shortcomings are significant because the Italian brand accounts for an outsized swath of Kering’s profits, but also because it was previously prospering under the leadership of its former designer, Alessandro Michele. Michele left the house in ‘22, and was succeeded by Sabato de Sarno. Gvasalia then took the role in ‘25. Gucci’s problems appear to extend beyond falling sales and into a darker, much less manageable territory: Politics. Fascism is on the rise, particularly in the US under President Trump. And as US politics continue to divide into increasingly inflamed camps, Gucci appears to be getting pulled into the mess. Few things can topple a brand’s carefully curated image like becoming the statement wardrobe for fascists—not to mention the most aesthetically illiterate political party on the face of the Earth. Minaj’s Gucci outfit signals that Demna’s approach to the brand may be going off the rails. But, then again, there has been a Gucci store inside NYC’s Trump Tower for almost 20 years…
