The front derailleur was all rusted frozen and wouldn't move. Soaked it in vinegar for a day and a half because I'm too cheap to buy rust remover, but it worked! Reattached it to the frame to test it out and it shifts again

To progress, you need patience.

Progress is never a smooth or straight road. It’s full of bumps, ups and downs, setbacks and unexpected turns. But that’s why success takes time. It takes consistency, resilience and most importantly, patience.

After two rounds of PRP injections and over 14 weeks away from the track, I’ve finally made it back to my first session.

One of my biggest lessons throughout this process has been learning to trust the work I’m putting in, even when I can’t see the results just yet.

More than half of the UK’s traditional crafts are now at risk of disappearing. That’s 165 of the 285 assessed in Heritage Crafts’ 2025 Red List, from bobbin lace making to glove making to thatching.

The reassuring bit: most of these skills aren’t gone. They’re just in very few, very skilled hands. And there’s something genuinely grounding about watching someone do one thing slowly and beautifully.

So we’re starting Meet The Makers, a new series of stories and films spotlighting the craftspeople keeping these skills alive, across the UK and (hopefully) beyond. Kilt makers, silk weavers, lace crafters, and whoever you tell us about next.
