Another year-late post! Last September, @andvnn, @tarunmacaroon, and I went on a weekend trip up to Samuel P Taylor State Park! We got the whole gamut of Bay Area views, including temperate cities, mountains, canals, and redwoods! The bike infrastructure was surprisingly good and the whole ride was just beautiful! The hiker biker camp was full, so they put us in a quiet overflow campsite we had almost all to ourselves, which was lovely! Tarun brought a luxurious amount of light so we were living large that night.

Please excuse the rattling in the videos! That's what happens when you mount things on an old steel bike with 28c tires and ride over bumpy roads. The light gravel approach to camp sounds especially loud 🥸 by @jason_rollrolls

Day 3 and last day that I had footage for! This was the most comfortable day yet and the most fun! We rode through some Oregon hops farms and enjoyed the views. Darius had the genius idea of pulling over to let a hops truck pass so we could harvest the hops that it dropped! They made for great bike decorations and had the rest of the ride smelling like an SF brewery. Our camp this night was the most luxurious one yet -- it was in a state park with a separate hiker/biker site equipped with picnic tables and showers!

Unfortunately, I didn't have enough battery to film our 4th day, but we biked through some pretty hills and greenery (finally!) to get to Portland. There was some really nice bike infrastructure there, some not as nice. My Amtrak home got cancelled and I was stuck there for a few days, but I was pleasantly surprised by the city! Would go back. by @jason_rollrolls

Day 2 of our Willamette Valley Bikepacking trip! This was our longest day at about 70 miles. After we survived the insterstate crossing, the ride was flat, sunny, and hot, which was a tough grind. Luckily for us, we took shelter in a shady driveway of what turned out to be a sunflower farm! Magical Sunflower Lady came out and gave us all cold water and chatted with us before taking our picture! So naturally, I had to buy a sunflower to put in my bike!

Not pictured here: me begging the hotel next to our campground to use a shower and them letting us use the shower in their broken hot tub area. There was a huge open window facing outside and no soap but that shower was still one of the highlights of the whole trip! by @jason_rollrolls

Extremely long overdue! Here's some footage from day 1 of the Willamette Valley bikepacking trip that @dr_irani21, @phuongust, and I went on last September!

Started the day off in Eugene. The Big E is surprisingly nice! Other than that, it was mostly biking through long, flat stretches of farmland with no tree cover, followed by getting eaten alive by mosquitoes! We shared our campground with a religious retreat and were treated to some pleasant Christian Rock music before bed!

Finally finished the Elite 12 restoration project! Swipe for before and afters (or, more accurately, after and befores). This was quite the learning experience and I'm super happy with the result! Huge shoutout to the folks over at the Bike Kitchen, especially Charles, as well as @parktoolblue, @rjthebikeguy, and @bikespeeds' YouTube videos! Besides cleaning and/or degreasing almost everything, here's what I did for each component:

 - frame: resin polish + ceramic spray
 - saddle: 3D printed Ryet saddle from AliExpress
 - front derailleur: removed rust, tri-flow in the pivot points, grease on the spring
 - rear derailleur: replaced with Suntour Cyclone Mk-II GT from @ebay, which was stock for this back in the day. Overhauled with fresh grease and tri-flow in the pivot points
 - cranks: light polish with Barkeeper's Friend
 - pedals: replaced with spare pair
 - bottom bracket: replaced with sealed cartridge square spindle BB. The old one had a fitting that no modern tool could operate
 - chain: replaced with YBN 8 speed
 - front wheel: replaced with wheel from the Bike Kitchen
 - both wheels: upgraded to 700c, new @vittoriatires Randonneur 28c tires
 - rear wheel: replaced with wheel with 8-speed cassette (11-32 teeth). Cassette cleaned/degreased and hub overhauled with new grease
 - brake calipers: disassembled to remove rust, tri-flow in the pivot points
 - brake pads: Kool Stop continental pads
 - brake levers: replaced with similar ones from Bike Kitchen not meant for turkey levers
 - brake hoods: Dia Compe non-aero hoods from @velo_orange
 - shift levers: bent lever replaced with one from the Bike Kitchen (lucky find!)
 - cables/cable housing: all recabled with a basic Jagwire set
 - bars: Goo Gone for the old adhesive, new bar tape
 - headset: light rust removal with vinegar + aluminum foil. Could've probably used an overhaul but didn't get to it (still spins freely, though) taken in The San Francisco Bike Kitchen by @jason_rollrolls

Rear hub overhaul! The rear wheel felt scratchy when I spun it, so the bearings definitely needed some work. Opening it up, the bearing races were pretty dirty (and hairy!), so that was all cleaned out. It seems like this wheel was pretty old since the grease on the non drive side was pasty and yellowing 🤮

After degreasing everything, I put in some fresh grease and reassembled the axle. Turns out you need a lot of grease! This wheel also has an 8 speed cassette, a bit of an upgrade from the old 6 speed freewheel. Spins a lot better now, but still not perfect -- could probably use some more grease! by @jason_rollrolls

Frame transformation! I was a bit disappointed with how dull the red of this frame was, but after washing it I saw how much it popped while wet. Took some resin polish and ceramic spray to it as per @bikespeeds and what a difference! It really pops now! It even looked like it was glowing under the street lights at night on my way to the bike kitchen by @jason_rollrolls

Near total drivetrain overhaul on my LeMans! My rear derailleur was feeling sluggish and was squeaking a bit so I decided to overhaul it before my upcoming bikepacking trip. Turns out it was pretty disgusting with grime everywhere, gunk stuck to the pulley wheels, and hair stuck inside the bushings 🤮

Replaced my chain while I was at it. Also wanted metal pedals for a more vintage look so I replaced those with MKS Sylvans. And during all this I noticed my chainrings were dirty, so I took those off and cleaned them too because why not. Everything is shiny and running buttery smooth now! by @jason_rollrolls

I'm replacing the rear derailleur on the fix-up with the one that would've originally come with -- a Suntour Cyclone M-II. Ordered one off eBay and it came in pretty good condition, but I took it apart to give it a deep clean and relube the springs and pulley wheels. This was also good practice for my actual bike since that derailleur is filthy by @jason_rollrolls

The front derailleur was all rusted frozen and wouldn't move. Soaked it in vinegar for a day and a half because I'm too cheap to buy rust remover, but it worked! Reattached it to the frame to test it out and it shifts again by @jason_rollrolls

And now for the problem child. A Centurion Elite 12 from 1983 which certainly needs a lot of work, but I literally got it for $30 so I can't complain. It's got a good amount of rust from being left outside and at least one of the previous owners seems to have gotten in an accident: the left downtube shift lever is bent, the bottle holder is bent in a way I never thought was possible, the rear derailleur has been replaced, the rims are a bit dented, and it seems like the hoods have gone through some stuff. Definitely very well loved. Looking forward to fixing this up little by little! by @jason_rollrolls

Starting off with my current bike. This is Bike. Lassie. Ol' Yeller. Bessie. Bichael. She is beauty; she is grace; she is a Centurion LeMans from 1988. All original save the seat, pedals, tires, and hoods. I get lots of compliments from bike nerds on this bike, and for good reason -- it's in great shape for its age and has a stunning paint job. I love bike. by @jason_rollrolls
