A forest and land fire is threatening Tanjung Puting National Park in Central Kalimantan, Indonesia, one of the key habitats for Bornean orangutans. A video circulating on social media shows thick plumes of smoke rising from both sides of a burning forest, raising concerns over the condition of the ecosystem and the wildlife living in the conservation area. Head of Indonesia’s National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), Lieutenant General Suharyanto, confirmed the fire at Tanjung Puting National Park. According to detikNews, he explained that poor visibility caused by thick smoke had hampered aerial firefighting efforts using water-bombing helicopters. Meanwhile, joint volunteers from the Yayasan Orangutan Hijau Kalimantan (YOHK) and the Indonesian Tour Guides Association (HPI) in West Kotawaringin have urged the government to strengthen aerial firefighting efforts to reach fire hotspots that are difficult to access by land. The fire poses a serious threat to the park’s peat swamp forest ecosystem and the Bornean orangutans that depend on it as their natural habitat. 💔💔💔😭😭
