The BAD Era — Michael Jackson at Full Power

The Bad era wasn’t just another chapter in Michael Jackson’s career… it was a whole new Michael.

After the unbelievable success of Thriller, expectations were almost impossible. But instead of trying to make Thriller again, Michael came back in 1987 with a new sound, new look, new attitude and even bigger ambitions.

And what an era it became.

Bad, The Way You Make Me Feel, Man in the Mirror, Smooth Criminal, Dirty Diana, Another Part of Me, Leave Me Alone… one album gave us so many unforgettable Michael moments.

Michael also made history when five singles from Bad reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 — a first for any album at the time.

Then came the Bad World Tour, Michael’s first solo world tour. This was Michael completely in his element: the buckles, black leather, curls, fedora, incredible vocals, spins, footwork and that explosive stage energy. Night after night, huge audiences watched him turn songs into complete performances.

And the short films? Pure Michael magic. Smooth Criminal gave us the white suit and legendary lean. Bad became a mini-movie directed by Martin Scorsese. Leave Me Alone later won a Grammy for its music video.

What makes this era so special is Michael’s confidence. He had already conquered the world with Thriller… but he was still hungry to create, improve and surprise everyone.

The music. The fashion. The dancing. The short films. The tour. The attitude.

This wasn’t simply the Bad era.

This was Michael Jackson showing the world exactly why he was the King of Pop.

What is your favorite memory from the Bad era?

What a blessing it was to (temporarily) feel like me again.💜✨My invasive tests revealed I have another mountain to climb, but that the climb will be worth it!! I’ll be having another neurosurgery on October 29th.

August 21 was the first time in a year that I experienced real relief, without my collar, from my daily neurological symptoms. I spent about 30 minutes in traction & a halo. I was put to sleep, woke up, & weights were added until my instability symptoms improved. They improved significantly & I’ll never forget that experience. That relief gave us a glimpse of what I should feel like after surgery, showed us where the problems are, and provided important measurements. More importantly, it was a reminder I’ll be okay & gave us clarity on next steps. I was put back to sleep & woke up with a bolt in my head to monitor my CSF pressure. A week later we had a call to discuss results.

🌟Surgery will tackle three issues:
🌟My cranio-cervical rod has a split & screws are impinging nerve roots, causing my symptoms, especially my CCI symptoms. As the break progresses, symptoms increase, which has already happened. This will be fixed so my fusion is one solid construct!
🌟My cerebellar tonsils are causing decreased CSF flow. Bone will be removed to create space for CSF incase this is contributing to my headaches.
🌟My CSF pressure was significantly elevated likely due to compressions (in my head/neck), which explains my headaches. I’ll have an important test called a venogram October 23rd to determine if a 3rd part of surgery is needed.
💫My spinal cord is retethered. IF it significantly impacts my quality of life, I will need an additional surgery.
💫 In true EDS fashion, I hurt my already unstable shoulder carrying a bag. It’s overwhelming, but thankfully, my doctors are on it and I’m having an MRI arthrogram.

This neurosurgery is just like the one I had in 2023 & it was my toughest battle but it allowed me to function again. We have hope that just like last time, this changes things for me! Dr B & his neuro EDS center’s motto is “once recognized never overlooked.” My time there was proof of that and because of that I’m so hopeful.
