In 1823 Schubert’s friend Johann Georg Stauffer invented Arpeggione. The instrument was conceived to be a “cello-guitar”. Like the guitar it is fretted, has six strings and tuned exactly like the guitar, in fourths. (The cello has four strings, tuned in fifths, and unfretted.) Yet the arpeggione can be bowed, it has f-holes and a bridge like the cello. The player is to hold the arpeggione with his or her calves. Stauffer commissioned Schubert to write a piece for this new instrument. In the Duo Recital in June, cellist Pavel Gomziakov and pianist Kenji Miura will perform the cello version of this work. After a decade from its invention, arpeggione was largely out of vogue, and after almost half a century, the composition was finally published in 1871, together with a violin and a cello version.
